It might be time for college basketball and me to call it quits...

A little background......

I grew up in Iowa with Roy Marble, B.J. Armstrong and crew as my college basketball foundation. George Raveling and Dr. Tom Davis were my basketball "mentors" through the television up until the time I transferred to OU in 1998.

The first OU sporting event I went to was a Bedlam basketball game. I loved it. I already had a love for college basketball, and the Bedlam experience was pretty special. I went home that spring break, and no one could understand how I had already become such a huge fan in the three months I had been on campus. I was devastated after the Indiana loss in the NCAA tourney.

I spent the rest of my college days as one of the rowdies in the student section. I got to cover Kelvin & crew for the Daily, which helped me grow my liking for Kelvin. I was hooked and was a big Kelvin fan.

Then the disaster happened with the phone calls. Don't get me wrong, I knew college basketball was dirty (hell, there were always rumors about a star player and the revolving vehicles in his driveway when I was in school), but I really had my head in the sand about it. It broke my heart.

It took me a long time to warm up to the Capel hire. I didn't like it at first. Then the first year's team showed fire, and it was refreshing. I was sold after the first year.

Then, Kelvin did it again. I lost my love for Sampson. How could he be so stupid? The luster of college basketball was starting to fade.

Now, this. It's horrible. It's a scar on my alma mater. It, whether Coach Capel is responsible or not, is all that is wrong with college basketball.

I haven't decided whether I will have tickets next year. My guess is that all will be forgotten by then and I'll be back. But right now, I am completely burnt out by the drama and shadiness. It's draining. I hope something comes in to save the day, I really do. If not, it might be time that I part ways with college basketball.

I know how you feel. I will always remain a fan of OU basketball, but I can't remember the last time I've been so anxious for football to start.

I'm actually more of an OU baseball fan than anything at this point. It's a much purer sport than basketball or football at the college level. Much less shady business. Plus, in baseball, if you're not cheating, you're not trying! :ez-laugh:

But really, the games are fun & cheap and Sunny has the program rolling and becoming a perrennial contender in the conference, and nationally.

Maybe we should turn this into an OU Baseball site.

Yep Sonny is the man, except he can't beat Texas and they go down in flames every year at the end of the season, that's the answer to all this OU gloom alright.

Are you serious? Do you really think Sunny is getting it rolling again?

I ask only because I don't know. The only time I get to watch them play on TV is the yearly sweep by Texas and I have my doubts if he can get us back. I love OU baseball as much as basketball and football so I follow it as much as I can living 6 hours away. I'm just tired of mediocre seasons...

I love going to the OU baseball games as well. As for Sunny I have a love/hate type of view toward him. His teams are always solid, and in the past he has had years when they have gotten hot at the right time, but he has yet to show he can get us to the elite level. But perhaps asking us to get to the elite level is a bit much. This isn't 1994 and I think sometimes we need to accept what we are.

Yes, I think he is. You have to walk before you can crawl. When he took over, we were sinking. Now, we're winning consistently. Granted, Augie and Co. have a jedi mind trick on us, but really, in Texas, you're comparing yourself to a top-2 program. We're, right now, #2 or 3 in the conference as far as our overall program goes. Recruiting (thanks mostly to Tim Tadlock from what I understand) is rolling. We've got depth for the first time in years.

Say what you want about the guy personally (there are two sides to every story) but he's a winner and he's starting to turn the corner, in my opinion. Last year's "collapse" was more due to running into a red hot Arkansas team than anything.

As I said above, I think he's turning the corner right now. The depth is finally there. I think he's grown as a coach (you see less and less rants/raves out of him in and out of the dugout) and the players respect him. They don't all like him, but as we've in in the LNC this year, that's not necessarily a bad thing!

Now, when Tadlock leaves, we'll find out whether Sunny is the key or not. There are many who think Tim's the mastermind behind the recruiting.
