A little background......
I grew up in Iowa with Roy Marble, B.J. Armstrong and crew as my college basketball foundation. George Raveling and Dr. Tom Davis were my basketball "mentors" through the television up until the time I transferred to OU in 1998.
The first OU sporting event I went to was a Bedlam basketball game. I loved it. I already had a love for college basketball, and the Bedlam experience was pretty special. I went home that spring break, and no one could understand how I had already become such a huge fan in the three months I had been on campus. I was devastated after the Indiana loss in the NCAA tourney.
I spent the rest of my college days as one of the rowdies in the student section. I got to cover Kelvin & crew for the Daily, which helped me grow my liking for Kelvin. I was hooked and was a big Kelvin fan.
Then the disaster happened with the phone calls. Don't get me wrong, I knew college basketball was dirty (hell, there were always rumors about a star player and the revolving vehicles in his driveway when I was in school), but I really had my head in the sand about it. It broke my heart.
It took me a long time to warm up to the Capel hire. I didn't like it at first. Then the first year's team showed fire, and it was refreshing. I was sold after the first year.
Then, Kelvin did it again. I lost my love for Sampson. How could he be so stupid? The luster of college basketball was starting to fade.
Now, this. It's horrible. It's a scar on my alma mater. It, whether Coach Capel is responsible or not, is all that is wrong with college basketball.
I haven't decided whether I will have tickets next year. My guess is that all will be forgotten by then and I'll be back. But right now, I am completely burnt out by the drama and shadiness. It's draining. I hope something comes in to save the day, I really do. If not, it might be time that I part ways with college basketball.
