It Was 20 Years Ago Today

I was at both games and remember them very fondly...what a freaking blast!!

i road-tripped from Colorado with a buddy for the MU game. bought tickets outside, will never forget it. spur of the moment, why the F not? decision, got in my Cutlass and we drove through the night.

Its probably hard for the younger fans to believe but the LNC sold standing room only tickets available. I was there for both the Mizzou & KU games and people were standing 3 to 4 deep all around the rim of LNC and it was a rockin.:billy

Sooner04 ... Wonderful post!!

I was at both games. You just brought back some great memories.

Thank you sir!

Ah, the memories! The Glory Days of OU basketball. It's good to reminisce about Sooner greats of the past who helped to put our BB program on the big stage nationally. Younger fans today have no idea how good we were back then. Thanks for the reminder, 04! :OUbball-logo:
Nice post.

Billy's teams made the LNC an imposing place for a visiting team to come and play. I can remember many games that OU would trail by double-digits and get on a roll with the fans rocking the house and come back to win the game. Kelvin's teams had a few games like this as well, early in his career before a lot of the fans soured on his style of basketball and him personally.

The Mizzou game in 89 was a classic as OU trailed by double-digits early and most of the first half and came back to win in OT. The Cal-State Northridge game in 82 was another classic with the Sooners down double-digits most of the game and made a furious comeback. The opposing teams seemed to wilt once the Sooners started running up and down the court and the crowd would be at a fever pitch.

This is why I laugh when posters talk about how poorly configured LNC is and how it's not a very good place for basketball. It was THE place for basketball in the 80's in the Big 8 and it hasn't changed except to be improved. It can still rock, we just need a coach who can put together a team good enough to get the fans rolling.
