Jeff Capel, OU players see bright future

Sounds about right. Maybe not what people want, but it is a fair assessment.

“It's hard,” Capel said last week in Kansas City. “I couldn't control it when I first got there and really couldn't control some of the things that happened this year.”

Nothing sticks to this guy, does it? He's the teflon head coach.

What do you mean?

Even now, instead of taking full responsibility, he continues to talk about things he couldn't control. He's just making excuses instead. One thing I've always admired about Bob Stoops is that he places the blame for losses squarely on himself. He doesn't blame the circumstances nor does he blame his players. Jeff Capel doesn't possess that same sense of responsibility. He honestly believes that circumstances have conspired against him. He isn't willing to acknowledge that he's been a ****ty head coach and recruiter these past two years.

I think I've told this story before. My mom was a professor at OU for almost 20 years. Faculty football season tickets were hard to get, but basketball tickets were really easy to find. I really started following sports closely back in 1995 when I was 10. Coincidentally, that's when OU football was down and Kelvin Sampson had just arrived at OU. So, I grew up loving OU basketball and going to almost all the games. Even when we got good at football, OU basketball remained more important to me because I felt a personal attachment to it. Jeff Capel has taken all that away from me and many other fans. That sad part is he honestly doesn't believe it's his fault. That's why he has to go. Not only is he a bad coach, but he's delusional and irresponsible.

I'm in the Capel camp and found that quote to be a little surprising. He couldn't control that first recruiting class falling apart, but everything since then has happened under his watch. Not sure why he feels otherwise.

I think you are being selective here, only noticing quotes that would support such a theory. He has taken responsibility countless times. That you failed to notice isn't his fault.

To say Capel hasn't taken responsibility is as far from the truth as one can possibly be. But, I understand it supports your hatred for him to engage in selective listening

IMO, it is not fair to paint someone as having "hatred" for the man. This is like using the "race card" to defame someone that you disagree with.

Whether you like it or not, the ACTUAL PERFORMANCE of the coach and ACTUAL RESULTS of the OU basketball program have convinced some of us that Capel just does not have what it takes.

The man has a losing conference record over his 5-year OU career.

We have endured back-to-back losing seasons for the first time in any of our memories.

Fan support has collapsed, as only a few dozen fans bothered to support the team in KC. Like most long-term hard core fans, I stayed home.

The games at the LNC are boring, as our team cannot even complete with the top teams in the conference.

It seems that every year there are recruits that leave so fast that old guys like me don't have time to learn their names.

Worse of all, the future does not look much better. I do not understand why Capel did not get some better recruits in the November signing period. He already knew that he needed to get better players. The WW/Tiny/TMG excuse was long gone.

When Capel was hired, I was very excited when many said he would be a great recruiter that would stockpile more talent than OU has ever had in the past. It ain't happened. Worse, it does not look like it is going to happen.

So, to wrap it up, OU basketball used to be fun before Capel was coach. Capel was given a wonderful opportunity to coach at the University of Oklahoma, and now OU basketball is no fun anymore. We all wanted Capel to succeed, but instead he is ruining the program.

Its not my fault. Its not your fault. And according to some, it seems that it is not Capel's fault either. It seems, that Capel is just a victim of circumstance.

Sigh.

I have stated I don't have see any problems with anyone wanting Capel to be fired. There is plenty of evidence and results which would dictate that line of thinking. We can debate the merits of the decision Joe C has to make, and I've gone back and forth in my head many times.

However, in THIS case, this poster did say he hated Capel. To me, that is inappropriate and extreme.

Trust me, I hate Capel as much as the next guy, but I don't think we would have landed Blake if not for him.

there's no reason to "hate" Coach Capel

How about all the pain he has caused me from watching my beloved University's basketball program die a slow and painful death?
I think this poster is a lone exception to this board, and I don't think anyone else actually "hates" Coach Capel, certainly not in the way some "hated" (and said so) Coach Sampson.

Edit: In fact, I think if this poster took a step back and thought about what it means to hate someone, he would retract his statement. Doesn't seem like an unreasonable person.

I haven't said one bad thing about Jeff Capel outside of what he's done as a coach. I don't know how any fan can really hate truly hate a coach unless they actually know them somehow. I don't know Jeff Capel as a person that well. I just know I don't like how he's coaching the program right now and the direction we are going. People can't turn a 14 win season into a positive like I've seen a few people do. That's a bad season.

Well said, Nick. I admit I don't read every single post on this board, but I don't recall reading very many comments that could be construed as a personal attack against Jeff. I don't understand why anyone would resort to personal attacks when Jeff's record at OU speaks for itself. I realize there are some people in internet land that will use words like hate, hater, and racist because they lack the intellectual capability of making a valid argument to support their position.

I agree, I've only seen the one poster do so. The Capel debate, indeed, has been more healthy than the Kelvin debate.

I've never read anything, true or even rumored, that leads me to believe any rational person could actually hate, or even dislike, Capel as a person. As a coach? Sure. But he seems like a good guy.

It's not like he's tearing your program down AND pulling a Quin and stealing his players' girlfriends, doing coke in the locker room and generally leading a self-destructive life that no one employed to mold kids into young men should lead (all rumors, none of it verified... but come on... you can't tell me Quin didn't just LOOK coked out half the time).

Can't disagree with that.
