Jeff Mittie, TCU coach, has accepted the Kansas State job, according to Michelle Voepel. I don't have a link. It was posted on HoopScoop.

TCU associate head coach Brian Ostermann will assume interim head coach duties as the Horned Frogs play at Colorado on Wednesday at 8 p.m. CDT in the opening round of the WNIT.

That's messed up!

Yeah, he really left TCU in the lurch.

Wonder what this with do to Makenzie Ellis 2015.

I'm not really seeing this. I think the winner in this may be TCU. Mitte had been there for fifteen years, and nothing of significance had been built. TCU will now have an opportunity to look at their program with the Big Twelve in mind and hire accordingly. Given a DFW location with some decent programs in nearby West Texas, they don't have a bad base on which to build. A younger firebrand might be able to do something there.

My question is why did KSU want him? I know they used to be a good team, but lately not so much.

I'm not sure who got the worst deal, Mittie or Kansas St.

It sounds like a force out, doesn't it. Win-win probably. Mittie can start over fresh at a different program and TCU can try to find a rising star or an established name.

Or, they can ignore the program and focus entirely on football

He's 47 years old, gets to "start over" close to home (he's from Blue Springs, MO, a KC suburb and his wife is from Junction City, KS) at $365,000/yr. with a $140,000 signing bonus and a 5-year contract with $25,000/yr. increases. Gee, I wish I had been "forced out" at a previous job with such a deal in the offing!

I think TCU came out the best. They got rid of a mediocre coach and now has the opportunity for an upgrade. That could be a good job for a great young coach.

From another board, his pay in 2011 was more than $638,000. Thus, this probably does mean a reduction of income. Even with the five-year increases in place, he won't be earning what he earned in 2011. But, I don't know what the situation was at TCU or why Kansas State might have selected him. I can see TCU deciding that a new face was necessary to inject energy into their program now that they are in the Big Twelve. I can see Kansas State simply trying to restore some order after some controversy. But, none of it is clear enough to have a good picture of how or why this occurred.

You don't need to be a bug on the wall to see that they were paying for NCAA tournament appearances and getting NITs instead. :)

TCU has also reached the Women's NCAA Tournament for six consecutive years, stretching back to the 2000-01 season. Each year, the Lady Frogs have won their first game of the tournament and lost the second game, except for first-round losses to Oregon in 2005 and to South Dakota State in 2009. TCU women's basketball has reached the post season 11 out of 12 years that Coach Jeff Mittie has been head of the program.

So, they're paying him based on that early success. Or at least, they were. Now, KSU can go on the cheap. I dunno what they were paying their former coach, but I bet it's more than they're paying Mittie now.
