Jelon Hornbeak commits to Oklahoma!

Re: Jelon Hornbeak commits

Do we have any good comparisons, game-wise, for Hield and Hornbeak to past OU players?

Is Detrick a decent comp for Hornbeak? What about Hield? A taller Hollis? Kelly Newton?

Oklahoma will go after a big man. It seemingly will be either a prep school kid or a juco guy. There preference has shown to be more towards innerchangeable and athletic type players so look for a player with those attributes to be on their radar.

Re: Jelon Hornbeak commits

I get the impressions that Coach Kruger really likes innerchangeable players. If he has a couple of 6'4 guards and a few 6'6 to 6'8 forwards, you can get away with a smaller center because you have length accross the board. Hield and Hornbeak give them a very nice sized backcourt for the future.

Completely agree and feel that this is the best way to build a team.

Re: Jelon Hornbeak commits

this is outstanding news!!

Congrats- good player. Sam and others have probably seen him play more than I have. But I've watched him 6 or 7 times. Here are my observations:

Smooth player; fearless taking it to the rim; great form on jumper; great in transition.

The games I saw him- he tried to make difficult passes too often when the easy pass would do (very common in AAU though). Defensive effort was spotty (also common with playing so many games back to back).

I told BigTime I would compare him more to Cory Higgins of Colorado.

He made one of the best plays I have ever seen in AAU ball. His Family First team (Isaiah Austin, Zeldric King, Chad Rykhoek, Emmanuel Mudiay) trailed an unheralded Deron Williams Elite team by 4 with 8 seconds left. FF threw a length of the court pass to King who nailed a quick 3. DWE didn't have to inbound the ball- less than 5 seconds. But they panicked and threw it in.

Hornbeak lunged for the ball and threw it at the rim in one motion. Hit the shot to beat DWE by one.

exciting news!

Nice job coach and staff...
