Kim Mulkey nominated for HOF

I don't think Kim Mulkey should be coaching amateur basketball.

But she is coaching amateur basketball and she will get into the HOF once the idiotic politics gets pushed to the wayside. Thing are really no different than they were when Barry Switzer's election to the HOF was delayed for ions.

The question is not will she but when will she. It is what it is.

Audacity. Comparing her to Switzer. Switzer's players honored him, and he treated them well. Her leave and write books about her deceit. How many women were assaulted at Baylor while she was a part of keeping a lid on it. I will have nothing but contempt for any organization that honors her. Is honor politics?

Perspectives differ with each individual. That is the strength of this country.
We need the diversity of opinion to keep the opposition reasonably honest. She probably is elected to HOF this year and consensus will be in due time. Rightfully so!

It is interesting that professional baseball has determined that it should have the principles not to place the all time leading home run hitter, the all time leader in career hits, and the man who broke Ruth's record in the Hall of Fame. They defined a standard for integrity, and they have lived by it. Professional baseball.

There is an ethical responsibility of a university and to anyone associated with an institution that portends to be involved in the formation of values and character of young people to adhere to the principles to which a society would aspire. Yet, the possibility that someone who has operated on very thin ice, seeking to stretch the limits of acceptability and tolerance as to behavior, rather than to advance the integrity of the sport, should be given an honor demeans the institution granting such an honor. Just as Willie Mays is not permitted to represent baseball, I would hope that if they take the irresponsible approach and place her in the hall that they will also remove her when responsible individuals re-examine the roles of institutions. It is unfortunate that professional baseball would exhibit more principle than an institution of higher learning.

What do you mean Willie Mays is not permitted to represent baseball? And the man who broke Ruth's record is in the hall of fame.

Seems to me the all time MLB home run hitter admitted to using PED'S and th career hits leader admitted that he bet on baseball the biggest no no in the sport.

Mulkey's violation included text messages and phone calls. She was restricted from recruiting off campus for 1 month, an assistant was prohibited from making recruiting calls for 4 months and the team lost 2 scholarships for 1 year. One could assume that Baylor's player like playing for her otherwise they would discourage prospects from attending Baylor which based on the quality of her recruiting classes is not the case.

Switzer and staff paid player, scalped tickets for players, provided free air travel and rental cars to players, supplemented assistant coaches salaries and lied to the NCAA . OU got 3 years probation, 2 year bowl ban and 1 year of no TV. Just because his players loved him does mean he was ethical in his conduct just popular.

Yes, Switzer's players loved him but that does not forgive his and his staff's illegal actions. Aside from the text messages and phone call Mulkey and staff are violation free. Anything else is nothing more than a personal opinion until it becomes the consensus.

As best I recall being personally disliked by some doesn't and shouldn't mean crap in this country. College campuses have long been the bastion of "free speech" but today many liberal students are of the opinion that those with views opposite of theirs should not be afforded that liberty to express themselves and make every effort to prohibit said speech. There is an ethical responsibility for the university to protect those "free speech" rights something they often fail to do. One should not forget that all opinions are likely right about half the time or just half right most the time regardless the slant. Or so says conventional wisdom and consensus.

You have conveniently forgotten that she assembled the team which led to all these good teams in a move that should have been a violation. Somehow, she got five players from an AAU team that she wanted at Baylor (or is it 6), and just happened to get her daughter on the team. Coaches can only visit the team as a recruiting visit.

Ah. But, skirting the intent,, just as she does with everything, she used the fact that she was a mother get her an exception. She went to all the games, sat with the prospect's parents, and, successfully, recruited six (according to Voepel and the Washington Post) players that were the core of a team that she thought would win three national titles.

Let's see. They did punch a girl, breaking her jaw, pull a girl's hair in another fight, (with coaches and players leaving the bench which somehow avoided getting suspended for a game for leaving the bench because it was in the playoffs). This came after she had a legitimate title, only to be irritated when OU beat her title team three times the next year with a freshman. She rebuilt illegally.

How dare you compare her to Switzer.

Again you choose to deal with opinions. She has no restrictions imposed against her for the actions you list. Voepel has her opinion to which she is entitled but hers like yours and mine is apt to be right about half the time or half right most of the time.

Comparing Mulkey is easy she has never manipulated the rules to the degree Switzer openly did. I don't have to personally like her but compared to Switzer she is a saint. And I love/loved Switzer but abiding by the rules was never his cup of tea.

I have to agree Barry Switzer will never get in the HOF for women basketball.

Mark McGwire is not in the Hall of Fame, nor are Barry Bonds or Pete Rose.

Willie Mays was banned by Bowie Kuhn from representing baseball for some activities 1980, as was Mantle in 1983 for associations with gambling casinos in Atlantic City.

And Mays was not banned from baseball. He took a PR job at a casino and Kuhn told him he could not be a coach or minor league instructor if he was employed by the casino. He could still show up at the hall of fame ceremonies and go to games.
