As every coach does! Or should!
How exactly has cousins earned a starting role?
Practice. We see them for an hour and half and coaches see them all week. Coaches want to win, don't you think he is putting the best players out there that gives them the best chance to win?

I honestly don't for this year.

Even though we only went .500 last year...I truly thought this team was heading in the right direction and that we were one or 2 bench players away from having an NCAA team last season. We came into this season with only losing Washington and Blair and we add several key bench components that we were missing last year. But instead of adding bench, he added 3 new starters and this team looks terrible, absolutely terrible. I don't need to watch every practice to know that last years team is better than this years team. We have had to come from behind to barely win or even barely lose to teams that not only aren't very good but to teams that we beat pretty easily last season. We should be so much better and we are worse!

I get what you are saying, but if you don't produce in games you shouldn't be starting IMO. He could be a all star in practice but practice does not reflect in our wins and losses
A serious conundrum at point guard.
Grooms cannot score, averaging 2.2 points while playing almost 17 minutes per game. Grooms has assist-to-turnover totals of 24-to-10, but he is weak on defense.
Cousins also does not score, averaging 2.9 points in 19 minutes per game, and also shooting a poor FG percentage of only 25%. Cousins has assist-to-turnover totals of 21-to-14, but he is much better on defense than Grooms.
Hornbeak is averaging 6.7 points in 24 minutes per game. His assist-to-turnover totals are worse at 17-to-19.
None of the three have been "clutch" at the free throw line, although Hornbeak gets to the line much more often.

So who has earned the starting PG role based on Game Day performance? One could make an argument for ... none of the above. As CoachTalk says, "everyone has a chance in games" as all three are getting sufficient minutes to show what they can do.
The Sooners still need much better play at point guard. Since the senior Sam Grooms' Game Day performance is clearly not better than the freshmen, why not play the freshmen a bit more? Sam Grooms has not really shown that he gives the team a better chance to win. The freshmen play better defense and the early season experience could pay dividends later on in conference games.
Insert mr. Jordan Woodard...!
