KSU's Sutton to Transfer

That hurts them a lot. I feel bad for the Kitties.

I wouldn't blow things out of proportion. It hurts them a bit as he was a solid senior wing who could defend, but I wouldn't say it hurts them a ton. Nino Williams, a fringe top 100 player, will be coming in now apparently. Same type of mold as Sutton.

How did I blow things out of proportion? This does hurt them a lot.
You lose a senior leader who's your best defender, your 2nd leading rebounder and your 5th leading scorer last year as your starting 3 and you say it "hurts them a bit". IMO, he was really there only true wing. McGruder is a bit undersized to play the 3 effectively especially on the defensive side.
So now they have basically one perimeter player back that played a lot in Pullen.
Yes, Nino Williams is coming in all of a sudden which I think backs my point that they need help desperately. Williams was going to go to prep school a year to get more seasoning but now Martin called him and said get into summer school ASAP and a day later he's headed to Manhattan.
Sutton is looking to transfer to Wake Forest or NC State to be closer to his two kids in NC.

He was a major liability on offense... that dude couldn't hit a jump shot to save his life, but he was a fantastic athlete and a good defender. It will hurt them, but not that bad really.

PG: Juevol Myles
SG: Jacob Pullen (all big 12 candidate)
SG: Rodney Mcgruder
PF: Curtis Kelley (all big 12 candidate)
C: Freddy Asprilla (newcomer of the year candidate)
6th Man: Jamar Samuels (all big 12 candidate)

I would rather see Mcgruder in there anyway if I were a k-state fan... Rodney can shoot and score, and at 6'4'' 205 is just fine defending wing players in the Big 12. They are all guards at this level anyway for the most part.

Kansas State should be really good if Myles is decent at point guard.

I don't see that lineup winning the Big 12. You got a 1st year PG who signed with La Tech out of high school and who wasn't that highly recruited out of juco either. McGruder who wasn't all that impressive last year. And from what I've seen of Asprilla is Luis Colon's twin.

I thought the loss of Clemente was too much to overcome. Now throw Sutton in the mix and they ain't winning it.

it's another question mark. certainly doesn't help.

sutton was told to leave, though. so obviously the staff felt like they could survive without him better than with him.

agree that the best result would be having mcgruder come out and claim the 3. samuels was much more effective as 4 than a 3 last year.

I have to agree with Cheno on this one. This is a huge loss. Any time you lose a player that plays significant minutes on your squad you are going to be set back. Sutton played a big role on KState last year. You will be hard pressed to find a better athlete than him. I know he was a liability on offense but his effect on the overall game will be missed with his absence.

Nino Williams is 19 so "seasoning" isn't as needed and the staff wanted Sutton gone. I'll stand by my point he will be missed but it's not all of sudden going to leave this massive hole in their lineup.

7.2 pts
5.8 rbs
1.9 assists

Nice numbers but the guy is tapped out and wasn't going to improve on those numbers. Nice senior role player. Much like Brady Morningstar for Kansas. He would be missed I'm sure, but KU would be just fine without him.

Then why was he going to prep school a year when he didn't need to?
He was a mildly recruited player out of Leavenworth, KS.
He may turn into a nice player, who knows, but obviously he needed "seasoning" because it was his plan to go to prep school next year even though he didn't need to.

:facepalm It's funny how when Dominique Sutton was still at KSU he was a much better player than today. LOL.
To compare Dominique Sutton to Brady Morningstar is silly. Morningstar will be lucky to get 10-15 minutes a game for KU this year. Sutton is a senior starter and KSU's best defender and 3 man. He would have got 25-30 minutes a game. The backcourt now has one proven player in Jacob Pullen.

Again, KSU will be fine...but they ain't winning the Big 12. I'll go on record with that.

don't understand why ku fans hate morningstar so much. he's a good player, and he'll get much more than 10-15 minutes/game.

i agree that the kstate fans now throwing sutton under the bus are foolish, but sutton wouldn't have gotten 25-30 minutes. he didn't get that last year, and his minutes were going to be crowded a little more this year. probably would have gotten closer to 20.

Where did I say I "hate" him? I don't really "hate" anyone. Morningstar is solid but his minutes went down signifcantly as the year went on. Tyrel Reed passed him on the depth chart. And next year KU's backcourt situation is even more crowded than this past year. I don't see him getting more than 15 minutes a game.

He avg 24 minutes last year. I guess I'm missing who these great new wing guys are. Who would have taken his minutes? With no Clemente around I think the juco PG and McGruder would have taken most of those minutes. And then losing Meriweather freed up some minutes also.
Maybe I'm wrong but with Sutton's senior leadership, defense and athleticism I would think he'd have played more minutes.

morningstar is better than reed. don't really see that ku's backcourt is getting more crowded. add selby, subtract collins & henry. seems like more minutes. unless you expect guys that couldn't beat him out for minutes before to do so during his sr. year.

good point re. merriewether's minutes. however i suspect that sutton's minutes would have shrunk due to kstate playing bigger with their surfeit of bigs and lack of proven guards. not that other wings would have beat sutton out, rather that kstate would have played more minutes with a big 3.

a moot point now that sutton's "senior leadership" got him kicked off the team.

No way Morningstar is better than Reed. Reed came on like gangbusters to end the year and Morningstar faded. Reed handles it better, shoots it better and is more athletic.
KU's backcourt is much more crowded. Selby takes all of Collins minutes without a doubt. X was the 3 and now you have Travis Releford and Mario Little off redshirt who both play the 3. Elijah Johnson is no longer a freshmen and has a ton of talent. He's going to be better with the natural progression of growth between frosh and soph. And then you have frosh Royce Woolridge who's been very impressive by reports. He won't play a whole lot but another guy battling for 5th-6th guard minutes.
Selby and Taylor both play 30+ minutes. Reed and Johnson are ahead of Brady backing them up. Releford, Little & Marcus Morris get most of the 3 minutes.

I just don't see 3 out of these 4....Samuels, Kelley, Judge and Asprilla...on the court at the same time.

Like Morningstar who was suspended 1/2 of last year?

Moringstar can drink more than Reed.

I would take Reed over Morningstar every day of the week. In addition, while Brady can drink, he doesn't look like he would be much fun to party with.

Sutton was a solid defender and role player. Losing him is a lot like OU losing Juan Pattillo a couple of years ago.

I remember Dominique well coming out of Patterson School. Tony Crocker was on the same team. I also remember that he came with a little baggage; primarily, his lack of effort in the classroom. Don't know if that's why he left K-State? But I'm not surprised by this news. I'm more surprised that he managed to stay for three seasons.

I liked the kid, though. I saw him play twice on television when he was at Patterson, and I was hoping he would end up at OU with T Crock (OU was recruiting him back then). Too bad things didn't work out for him at KSU.
