Anyone who thinks they are a weakness is crazy. I wish that wasn't the truth, but they have shooters, drivers, defenders ...

Their guards are a weakness. That's not a final four backcourt unless those freshmen make enormous strides.

And weakness is relative of course; KU is going to win the conference. They just aren't put together for an NCAA tournament run. They have 1 seed that loses to an 8 written all over them.

Agree. Vick can be the best player on the court at times, but then he also seems to always choke or just be a dumbass. He took a terrible 3 tonight in the corner late in the game. I like the Fr point guard, Grimes just doesn't seem to be KU good yet.

Yet being the operative word. 11 games is a pretty small sample size to draw that conclusion about Grimes. Again, Self has called him the most complete guard he has had at KU. Once he figures it out, watch out. He obviously hasn't played nearly as well as capable to this point, and I hope that continues for at least two more games lol.

When do they get azubike back? What’s his injury again?

I would be surprised if he doesn't play against us, it isn't for what 10 days? Of course without him being in the game and the Hack-a-Shaq we employed we don't beat them last year at the LNC.

I wouldnt defer to KU in this game right away. OU's backcourt maturity is its' biggest strength and KU's apparent weakness.

I think we have a realistic chance to get them in Norman, but not in Phog.

KU would be an average team if not for Dedric Lawson. That will change when Azubuike returns, but I’m not impressed with their backcourt right now..

He'll definitely play against us. He was close to playing last night but not quite ready. He'll probably play Saturday against Eastern Michigan and then be fully ready for us. It's a bad ankle sprain that he suffered a couple days after Muni hurt his.

So KU wouldn’t make the dance without Dedric Lawson?

That’s not what I’m saying. I acknowledged the impact of Azubuike’s absence. He will give KU another stud in the front court when he returns. I said I’m not impressed with KU’s guards “right now,” meaning I think they will continue to get better.

This is not the typical KU backcourt that includes an assortment of playmaker guard/wings, as well as a Mason or Graham to run the offense. Grimes may be able to fill those shoes in time. But he’s not there now, and it’s not even close.

KU is still the odds on favorite to win the conference again. I just don’t believe it will be as easy as some seem to think.

Bump. Guards looked pretty darn good tonight.

I disagree. Outside of Vick, perimeter play is the biggest weakness KU has this year.

To expound, Grimes and Dotson got a fair share of their points on easy transition buckets when we didn't bust our ass to get back.

Im with storm.. and im usually on the same page with wichita

Guards are really good. Athletic, tough & defend. I thought both teams guards defended really well.

Their guards were not good last night. That's why an OU team down it's best frontcourt player kept it commpetitive in Phog last night.

Vick, Dotson, Grimes is literally the worst KU backcourt I can ever remember.

I agree. Vick is the guy who can kill you from outside. The other guards are good/athletic but guys you can maintain. They are fast and athletic though. I think their speed surprised our guys in the first half but we managed them better in second. And even in first half their breaks were coming off open 3s that we continued to brick.

Sometimes I wonder which games some of you are watching. So many people on this board say our guards are our biggest strength and were likely our biggest advantage over KU. Last night, their backcourt outscored ours 46-35, and was largely responsible for the turnover margin by getting 10 steals. And two of them are freshman, whereas other than JB, we have all senior guards. I love JB and so does everyone on this board, but if we had two freshman like Dotson and Grimes, we would all be talking (rightfully so) about how great a backcourt duo we had. I guess people just hold KU to a different standard and expect that those guys to score 20 pts a night like Mason and Graham did in their senior seasons. On a team with one of the best players in America plus a dominant big man, that isn't exactly their role. What exactly did they do last night that makes you say they weren't good last night?

What they'll be in the future has no bearing on what they are now. If we had an all freshman backcourt I'd be excited about the future, doesn't mean they are good today.

They did play very well on defense, but offensively it was a weak performance. They weren't able to create great shots for their big men. They didn't shoot well. Their starting backcourt combine for 3(!!!) assists to 9 turnovers.
