I don't think we have scratched the surface of what Maddie can do. One of the reasons that I hope that Maddie does return for a sixth year is that I think she will need that much time to figure out what she can do. I don't think she has a clue yet as to how good she can be.

On another thread, it was asked if I thought Sherri was right when she said that Maddie would be the best in the Big Twelve eventually. I will take that further. I think Maddie has the potential to be the best player in the history of the Big Twelve. We have seen some glimpses, but only glimpses, of what is possible.

In the NCAA rpi ratings right now, BYU is #10, having beaten the team that we play tomorrow, A&M, by eight (never mind that we are rated #32, and we beat BYU by 26). But, Maddie decimated BYU with eleven points, several rebounds, and a couple of assists in only the first four minutes of the game. By the time BYU looked up, they were down ten, nearly all due to Maddie. She has that explosive capability, and she could probably do it every game.

I want to see her at OU long enough to see what is possible.

Very few things in life are 100% or 0%. But this prediction does come extremely close to being 0%.

sybarite, i never have understood what your fascination is with this one particular player.

Manning is certainly not a bad player, but she has also never been an elite one, either.

I agree with TC. I thought Maddie would be a good player coming out of high school, but no way will she be better then Paris or Griner...

Why do you think Sherri and Chad Thrailkill made the comments that they did about Maddie?

I think the question for Maddie is Will she stay in the basketball program long enough to realize her potential. If she gets a hardship rule and stays, she will open some eyes.

Let's look at 2012-2013.

OU 69 Creighton 48
UCLA 86 OU 80
OU 68 St. Louis 33

Then, OU went to Hawaii and inserted a freshman, Maddie Manning, into the lineup:

Aaryn Ellenberg
Nicole Griffin
Morgan Hook
Maddie Manning
Whitney Hand

That lineup was 3-0 in Hawaii.
OU 73 Arkansas 70
OU 100 Oregon 61
OU 74 Hawaii 49

In those three games as a starter, along with Ellenberg and Hand, Maddie had this line:

FGA 19
FG 13
3PTA 1
3PT 1
FTA 8
FT 6
Total Points 33
OR 2
DR 13
Total Rebounds 15
PF 11
Assists 8
TO 9
Blocks 1
Steals 4

This team rebounded and won a Round of 32 game against UCLA, 85-72 before losing to Tennessee in the Sweet Sixteen---after losing both Maddie and Whitney to injury. The starters that played in that last game:

Joanna McFarland
Nicole Griffin
Morgan Hook
Aaryn Ellenberg
Sharane Campbell

Reserves
Nicole Kornet
Portia Durrett
Jasmine Hartman

As a freshman, Maddie averaged more points as a starter than she has thus far yet, and it was on a Sweet Sixteen, a team that made the Sweet Sixteen after she and Whitney were gone with injuries. It was no soft touch team. Joanna was a vicious rebounder.

She is almost caught up with where she was as a freshman.

I remember that year, I thought Manning would be like an undersized Breanna Stewart a versatile do it all type of player, who could rebound, block shots, and pass... Since then she hasn't show that much to me as a player, even tho she's off to a decent start...

I also remember that game vs Tennessee we lost Hook at game and had to play alot with Hartman... when Hook was on the ground Meighan Simmons rolled over her knees and it took Hook out the game...

Three games does not a trend make. Especially 3 early games as a freshman. Maddie has a tremendous skill set but does not and is not likely to acquire such before her career at OU comes to an end. Maddie does not go for the throat when she sees blood nor does she attack aggressively after scoring double digits in the first quarter of a game where every point is needed. Maddie should be touching the ball every possession with the charter to attack. She should be taking 10-15 shots per game not the 7.8 she is and if she did so she would be scoring closer to 15 p/g instead of her 9.4.

To quote a frequent poster on this board "T'ona is a junior. It is a bit late to be learning some things". Maddie is a redshirt junior that has had two seasons of sitting next to Sherri being explained how to play the game and she still hasn't learned how to be aggressive and attack an opponent for 40 minutes. The only real explanation is she hasn't figured it out, she doesn't have the confidence, she doesn't have a shark mentality or she doesn't want to push herself.

For certain she knows her skill set and she knows what the team needs that she can provide. Maddie has one more year of Sherri's teaching, started 11 more games and has played 422 more minutes than has T'ona. If one thinks that for T'ona it is a bit late to be learning some things then it is quite a bit late for Maddie to be learning things as well.

Personally, if I was Sherri and Chad I would be telling Maddie could be the best player in the conference constantly as well as demanding it even if I thought it was very unlikely to occur just on the chance that the light might come on she would become that player. But if after 3-1/2 years in the program and 478 minutes on the court she hasn't figured it out and taken the action it is remote that she will ever do so. Sad but most likely true. I hope I am wrong.

OK.
Well, Maddie has basically had 11 games as a starter- which is the only games she has had reliable minutes, and could develop a comfort level. Prior to those 11 games she has had one season where coaches were clearly looking to ease her back in, and I believe she averaged around 15 mins a game. She then went in to her only healthy off season since being here, I think that makes her 11 games into her sophomore season- and if she takes a medical thats exactly what it would be. From what I can tell, Maddie actually doesn't have a very developed skill set. She beats ppl on raw ahtleticism- her potential skill set however, is unmeasurable. She can do everything there is to do on a basketball court. The Maddie now, will not be the same Maddie at the end of the year- and I suspect next season she will contend for POY- I think she is that talented, and so does our HOF coaching staff. Say what you will about Sherri, but one thing she does well is brings out the scorer inside them. I don't think this is even close to what she can and will do. I would preach patience here, or you will be going back on some of the things you have said.

Also, whoever says TT is as good as she is going to get, is also dead wrong. She is just scratching the surface as well. That is the most improved player I think I have ever seen go through Oklahoma and she is getting better every game.

+1
But, I do think that T'Ona has to learn what she can't do. Then, she has to learn to do it.

I think she is learning syb. She pulled up on the break several times when we didn't have anything- Usually she would just force force force. She is progressing- still has to keep improving, but I love what I'm seeing from TT.

T'ona is shooting 32% from the field, .0% from BTA, and 55% from the line. Not good.

You can't take anything from a scoring stat line and evaluate a Point Gaurds impact on a game. Her pace of a play and distribution, along with her defensive abilities is what I look at. And that is starting to reach a very high level.

She's causing a lot of havoc on the defensive end, which we need.

The non-conference season has always been a preparation for the conference season and tourney. The game yesterday was a great preparation for conference season and beyond, although most of us didn't like the outcome.

T'Ona is not very effective except on defense and then she is busy but not outstandingly effective. On offense she is too expensive to be on the floor.
