Per this:

@JonRothstein: Oklahoma big man Akolda Manyang (stress fracture) won't be ready to play for at least another three weeks, Lon Kruger told @CBSSports.

If Mcnease comes out and plays well, Manyang is going to have a hard time carving out minutes IF he ever comes back healthy.

I saw it on one of the other threads, but why would they not consider red shirting him? I can understand wanting to win now, and maybe that was the reason.

I say if we don't redshirt him then we MAKE SURE he is healthy before playing him. As long as he is ready for the end of the season that's all that matters to me. We will be fine through the regular season but he could help with depth in the tourney.

I have had trouble with stress fractures in my feet (and I am not even close to being a 7' tall male), and those things nag. Even if he's cleared in 3 weeks, he likely isn't going to be 100%.

I don't know. I'm as excited as the next guy about McNease, but let's face it, we've only really seen what he can do vs. a D2 school. I'm afraid he'll struggle against more physical teams. Having him as the only real post backup doesn't seem ideal. The other option, of course, is if OU can go small with Buford or even Odomes at the 4. Still, I'd like to have the option down low when foul trouble inevitably happens in Lawrence or Ames.

I'm not sure he has a redshirt year available.

usedtobe1 seems to think AK still has a redshirt year (see post on another thread below):

Manyang has had a strange and interesting path to OU. He graduated from HS in Minnesota from Duluth East in 2012. He wasn't allowed to play in the state playoffs because someone reported seeing him smoking (???).

After almost signing with Minnesota, he played a year of prep school ball at Potter's House Christian School in Florida graduating in 2013. I think his grades weren't good enough to get into a D1 school after his final year of HS in Minnesota..... I read somewhere that he had some "problems" his HS freshman or sophomore year in Minnesota. Maybe that's why he was living in that Duluth facility.......

After Potter's House, he went to Indian Hills juco for 2 years. As most of you know, he didn't play for part of the year last year for some reason, but later returned to the team. His coach at Indian Hills, John Wardenburg, still had this to say about him when he committed to OU which was before he left the team for a month in the middle of the season.

This guy was a stud that the Sooners were happy to sign. Ironically, the way I read it, he still technically has a redshirt year available because prep school doesn't start your 5 year eligibility clock.

I don't pretend to know the status of his health and how he might fit into the team this year if he is able to get healthy. Assuming he will get healthy and is capable, I do love the idea of having him in there in key defensive situations and with certain match-ups. However, the most important thing is to let him get healthy.

Yes, I do. He graduated from Prep School in 2013 and went to 2 years of Juco at Indian Hills. He still has 3 years to play two.

AK graduated from a Duluth Minn HS in 2012 and went to prep school in Jacksonville Fla called Potter's House Christian Academy. This link shows he made the Florida All-State Independent Team for 2012-2013. He was one of the 5 players on the 1st team. I thought "no big deal" making a private school all-state team until I looked a little closer.
- Another 1st team member was Joel Embiid who was the 3rd overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft
- OU's Dante Buford was named to the 2nd team as a junior (Manyang was listed as a senior).
- D'Angelo Russell was named to the 3rd team as a junior. He later went to Ohio State and was the 2nd overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft.
- Buford's HS teammate at Arlington Day, Brandone Francis, was on the 3rd team. He had to sit out last year too as a Florida freshman.

Not bad company.........

2012-2013 Florida Independent All-State Team

Here's some stuff about Potter's House Christian Academy: Potter's House

Getting him ready for conference play should be the priority.

Good to hear from CC's report that he practiced in full for the first 30 minutes of practice yesterday. My biggest concern is his lack of basketball shape when he comes back.
