Marcus Smart has upped his game in the NBA

lol.....there are rules in place to punish flopping. I don't like it, but the Smart hate around here is ridiculous.

He just got done carrying Boston thru the second half of the 4th quarter in a comeback win vs Atlanta. 20 points, 8 boards, and 5 assists. Off the bench. And also started locking down Milsap late in the game. Milsap is an all-star caliber PF, btw.

Who were the morons saying that Smart would be out of the NBA in a few years (when he was drafted)? That little prediction is looking really, really bad right now.

So freakin predictable...

Omg he helped win a game?! Let's get him an all star bid! :ez-roll: Dude comes off the bench and wont be anything more than a role player

He was literally the worst shooter in the NBA this year.

Yep. NBA management usually don't waste top 4 picks on role players. Shows how weak that draft class was. He wouldn't sniff the lottery this year, IMO.

With the right leadership, he could be really good. Probably won't happen though. He had a not-so-special season, but has stepped it up a bit in the playoffs. Some nice highlight moments, but unfortunately for him, his biggest highlight of the season will be that ridiculous flop.

Marcus Smart wasn't a Top 4 pick; he went #6. But it's a ridiculous argument anyhow.

2014
Andrew Wiggins
Jabari Parker
Joel Embiid
Aaron Gordon

2013
Anthony Bennett
Victor Oladipo
Otto Porter
Cody Zeller

2012
Anthony Davis
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
Bradley Beal
Dion Waiters

2011
Kyrie Irving
Derrick Williams
Enes Kanter
Tristan Thompson

2010
John Wall
Evan Turner
Derrick Favors
Wesley Johnson

Twenty players, only three of whom have been selected for an All-Star game. Wiggins is on his way, and it wouldn't be a stretch for Beal to reach that level. Parker and Gordon have shown flashes, but they--like Smart--haven't yet proven to be anything more than "role players" after just two seasons.

At this point in their careers, Smart has as much or more trade value as half the players on that list. Of the half with more value, half of those are simply better role players.

Stars aren't the norm, even if you narrow the field down to Top 4 picks. Comparing Smart to other #6 picks, he stacks up well. Of the last ten #6 picks, Brandon Roy and Damian Lillard are the only All-Stars, and Gallinari is the only other #6 pick with a better career than Smart (unless you want to argue for Noel, too).

We can marvel at the ridiculousness of Smart's flops without making absurd claims about the nature of the NBA draft or Smart being a wasted pick.

I can't believe people still stick up for marcus smart. He is a below average player all things considered

No, ALL things considered, he is not below average. From an offensive efficiency stand point alone, he'd be below average.

He wouldn't be playing 30+ minutes off the bench for a decent playoff team if he was an overall "below average player." The hate is strong.

This.

The NBA is littered with "role players". That is why the same teams dominate the NBA year after year. There are so few stars that when a team gets one, they usually win big for a few years. And why it's so difficult for bad teams to turn it around, even drafting high in the 1st round. If you can't draft a star, your team will likely continue to struggle.

Defense is good. Offense is BAD! Antics and personality are bad!

He won't ever be part of a winning team imo. He will be one of those guys that gets moved around quite a bit b/c championship teams will know he is cancer

His teammates love him. He was on arguably the 3rd best team in the East this season, and that is a team that isn't even entirely rebuilt. Boston fans love him. Metrics love him. And he just turned 22. I'm guessing his offense looks quite a bit better when he is 25. But even if the O never comes around, what he did on defense last night guarantees him a place in this league for years to come. It was one of the best individual defensive performances from a guard I've seen in the NBA in some time. By the end of the game, dude was shutting down an all-star caliber PF that had gone off for over 40 points in the game.

Which metrics love him? A few of the defensive metrics like him, but they don't love him and when you look at the total game metrics, they aren't good.
