Mason-Griffin defiant heading into draft > Tulsa World

I am a teacher and coach at the high school level. His quotes sound very similiar to kids who are scared yet outwardly act tough and hard. It is sad actually. Tonight will be a sad day for him yet, when his name doesnt get called he will blame it on others and say its political or whatever excuse he can come up with. I know a lot of you on here wish him the best in basketball. Thats not what we should be doing. We should be hoping his life gets in order b/c hes headed down the wrong path with the attitude he is currently possessing.

I agree with you. He really needs to change not only his attitude but from what I can tell, his friends too.

Unfortunately I think it's too late for any major interventions for TMG. He's made the decision to step into adulthood by making this jump. This alone shows that he is willing to ignore the advice of his elders, since I can't imagine anyone counseling him to jump so early.

Hopefully he can find an older role model in the D-league or overseas. There are a lot of good guys who used to wear crimson and cream now playing overseas that could teach him a thing or two about maturity. I wish the best for him, but whether he turns out to be a superstar or a scrub, he needs to keep working on maturity. Sometimes, when everyone is telling you one thing, it's because they're right, not because they were trying to negatively motivate you to be better.

"Oklahoma was a great place," he told the Chronicle. "I loved the fans and loved everything about it. School work was just not in my comfort zone. I just had to get out of there with the season I had. I probably let people down, but at the same time, it's my life and that's what people don't understand."

I see nothing wrong with that statement. There are quite a few people that start at OU that don't finish there. Hopefully he gets an opportunity, he can definately heat it up on the offensive end.

TMG was a great player at OU - a ferocious defender, great ofensive player, and very coachable. Well at least part of this statement is true, lol. His head is just screwed on mostly wrong. Hollisp hit the nail very close to the head. This kid would've ultimately been a great college player. However, he freely admits that he just did not want to go to class. The longevity of chubby, non-defending, prolific scoring point guard head cases in in the league is not very long; the duration of their longevity can be described as a big zero. Sadly, he is very likely not prepared for the NBA nor life outside of basketball......

I'm split. On one hand I think school was just too much for him (even with all the tutors and easy classes, I guess), and I wonder if he wouldn't have had eligibility problems had he stayed. On the other, I see a lazy kid who could have made more of an effort and got through his classes, as well as improve his game. If there's one thing that's common about young people, they often think they know what's best for them, while more experienced people around them shake their heads.

I don't see him as much different from Nate Robinson, both being very muscular, aggressive offensive players but weak on defense. TMG will get some summer league chances.

Guys I spent 27 yrs in federal law enforcement and if Griffin doesn't change his attitude and friends as someone stated, TMG will be locked up somewhere in his life. He gives the impression that the world owes him something and that attitude only gets you in trouble.

I for one am very glad to see several of those kids gone from our team, while in the short run it may hurt, in the long run we will be just ok.

Nate Robinson has off-the-charts athleticism for his size. TMG doesn't.

I didnt really see his comments as being that of someone openly defiant against the world etc. He's had a tough life and being a 5 10 PG had to grow a chip on his shoulder as he never was likely to get much praise from recruiting/NBA scouts.

In the end this is a kid who just didnt want to go to college and study, he sees his future as a pro player somewhere. Obviously he is very immature but I still dont wish him bad, I dont see this one ending well either.

TMG is nowhere near Nate Robinson in terms of athleticism or style of play. Nate should be playing football anyway.

He probably never wanted to go to college and study, but the way the system is set up he pretty much had to go for at least one year. To me there is no fault in that, just the way things are set up. Dude chose to go the D-1 route, was recruited by numerous schools, chose OU over those schools, went to school, didn't like it, came out and said that while he enjoyed OU and the fans, he just didn't want to go to school anymore. With presumably most of us being OU fans, I would like to think we would focus more on the compliments that he gave us than what he may or may not be doing to throw HIS life away by chasing his dream to play professionally. That's just me though.

TMG was the best player on the court most of our games last year. He is going to make a roster in the NBA this season.

Who cares if he didn't want to attend college? Even if he fails in the NBA and ends up playing over seas he will make more than 95% of people who graduate from OU.

Who wants to bet that TMG will earn substantially more income in the next 12 months than scribbles who wrote that article?

I hope he does. But, a better bet would be if he has any of that money left in 5-10 years?

I agree with this. College isn't for everybody. Unfortunately the stupid NBA rule you have to go for a year causes situations like this. Would TMG have went to college if he could not have played basketball? No. Do people call kids that aren't college material who go to become a mechanic, factory worker or whatever out of high school stupid? No. At least they should not.
The reality is regardless of what happens tonight TMG is probably going to make a lot of money playing basketball overseas.
