Sure they want both. Who doesn't? But a team full of good citizens with an average record doesn't get picked up for TV. They don't make the post season. The people who pay donor money, season ticket money or just come to a game now and then and pay at the door come to see a winner, not a group of kids working to improve their life.
Yes, the coaching staff needs to make sure they are making grades and give them the opportunity plus encourage them to go beyond the field and into the community, but that isn't their first focus and ultimately not what they are being paid to do. You're kidding yourself if you think the revenue and the good publicity from a winning team doesn't come first.
You have just made the best possible argument for eliminating sports from universities. You have stated the reality that the NCAA has never admitted, as well as that which the college presidents must now come to grips. It's about revenue rather than ethics or education---hence Penn State's recent crisis. This is also why the introduction of salaries could probably destroy college sports.
I must admit that I am more proud of Caton Hill and her service as a physician than I am of anyone who goes pro. I would prefer Senator Paris to Center Paris.
