My four cents on Trae Young.....

I have seen hundreds of Sooner games at Lloyd Noble and other arenas when traveling, but I am quite disappointed that I never got the chance to see Blake live in a Sooner uniform. sigh

It was electric watching him and his brother play together at Lloyd Noble. The game where Pat Knight labeled Blake "terminator" sticks out, when he went for 40 and 23 rebounds.

Here's to some more electric Sooner memories with Mr. Trae stepping in to a young and talented team.

I went to all of his home games but it was apparent that Oklahoma was not a basketball state when we couldn't sell out most games with national POY. Every game he threw down 2-3 highlight dunks at least.

I never saw him play at the LNC but I did get to watch him play in the first round of the NCAA tournament in 09 vs Morgan State. That's the game the player flipped Blake. That happened right in front of me. I was in the lower level behind the goal.

Went to every one of blake's home games and paid $0. Ou had a student ticket deal that if you went to 90% of the home games you get a full refund. Amazing times!

Blake's sophomore season is the second most dominant CBB season in the past 20 years, behind only KD's year at Texas. He was a man among boys out there, and it was fun to watch. It's unlikely that we'll ever see a player with his physical gifts return to college for their sophomore season again.

I thought it was George Mason but the old memory ain't what it use be.

That's a great idea! If they're not doing something like that right now, they should be.

I think that pro basketball team has hurt both OU men and women attendance, or at least some.

100% agree. I hear attendance is down in the town north of Perkins too.

Anyone know how good of a defender he is?

Anyone who says they know if he is a good or bad defender from only HIGH SCHOOL games is a bad liar. What I mean by that is he doesn't even try to play defense. He gets a lot of steals because he is looking to steal passes and jump lanes, but that isn't the same as playing defense.

He has the ability to play defense I believe, however I have never witnessed him try so I can't tell you if he can or can not.

Those who have watched him in EYBL or MoKan games might be able to tell you.

That is not a knock on him, I am just saying I can't tell from what I have seen. It is a lot like Blake in college, do you want him all out on defense and maybe getting into foul trouble or just do a few things and control the game on the other end.

I think if Young can get the ball in bounds, not step out of bounds, not throw the ball to other team, hit FT's late in game he will be fine and help the team a lot.

IMO, the biggest deficit high school players have when they begin as college freshmen is on the defensive end. The fact is that most great high school players don't have to play good defense to get on the court and they know that it's their ability to score that will get them the college scholarship. Plus, they're not used to defending players with their size or skill level. Moreover, defense simply isn't taught or valued in the AAU circuit.

I would, therefore, expect Trae to be a poor defensive player at least early on. Like you, I'm not knocking Trae. It's just a part of the game he's going to have to learn and improve on. From what I've read, defense is currently the weakest part of his game. I'm not saying he can't or won't be a good defensive player but I don't think it'll happen immediately.
