NBA Labor Issue

Have you ever seen MLB? I am pretty sure they don't have a salary cap in baseball and it works. The Yankees spend the most and win the most but they don't always win.

Ya, I have, and the lack of a salary cap is the worst thing about MLB. Example, a few years ago the Colorado Rockies played the Boston Red Sox for the World Series. It was a joke. Boston Red Sox had a roster worth 2 or 3 times the amount the Rockies were paying, and they destroyed them in the series.

Good grief, talk about cherry-picking. How'd Colorado get to the World Series, anyway? You're telling me one seven game series is more indicative of the viability of low payroll franchises than a 162-game-season in which Colorado presumably played against teams with a higher payroll?

Fact: In the last 10 years, nine different teams have won the World Series. If someone other than St. Louis wins it this year, it will be 10 different teams in 11 years. That's 1/3 of the league.

The teams currently left in the MLB playoffs are #'s 10, 12, 13, and 16 in the league in terms of payroll.

24 of MLB's 30 teams have made the playoff in the last ten years.

The notion that baseball is made up of rich teams who dominate and poor ones who can't compete is flat-out wrong.

In any event, whether or not salary caps and drafts are good for the league is irrelevant to my point: players salaries are artificially deflated due to their existence.

Are they free to do it? If the players are free to start their own league, they should begin discussions of it immediately.

I'm not a lawyer, but I'd be shocked if they aren't free to do it. Their employers aren't honoring their contracts.

I am an attorney and I tend to agree that they are free to do it. I think the union should start discussing this. Imagine if you are owner with a franchise worth $200,000,000 (or whatever it is worth) and you literally facing new competition that could make your franchise worthless. Your negotiating position would change instantly. It would have to.

First two weeks of the season canceled. What a bummer.

I agree with LoveDemSooners.. this is the BEST thing for OU basketball right now... Get those causal basketball fans back into the LNC, now LK just needs to keep them coming back

We need to play good ball. That'll help the program the most.

They need to change this negotiation by telling the owners they are going to start there own league.

Pardon me for not feeling sympathy for the players trying to protect their losses so they can still make 6-8 figure salaries for playing a game.

No company in the world pays the employees more than the owner/s make... To me its a no brainer for the owners to just sit till they get at least a 50-50 split...
Also I know the owners are making money, but I dont feel sorry at all for the players in their #standunited campign efforts!

Exactly... no pressure here for the owners. They own other companies and have other sources of mega income, investments, etc. It is the players and the regular employees that will suffer from this.

What business in America are the employees GUARANTEED 57% of all income? What kind of smart business sense does that make? I don't really feel for the players in this situation. The AVERAGE salary is 4.97 million per year....or 92,000 per WEEK. That doesn't even include endorsement money. The owners offered 50% and a chance for it to increase if basketball income increases. That is as fair as far as I am concerned.

MANY MANY players do not take care of their money anyway.....when that salary isn't coming in regularly they are probably going to cave, like someone said earlier. A lot of these guys don't even have an education.....let them apply for real jobs for $10-12 an hour (if they are lucky) and see how much that 5-7% they are squabbling over is important. Honestly, the owners got themselves in this position by overpaying players anyway. It is really hard to feel sorry for either side. the fans are the ones that get ripped off in all of it.

I dont feel sorry for the owners either, bc youre right they put themselves in this situation. But it is a problem they can and will get themselves out of...
I hope they end up getting less than the 50% the owners are offering (from reportss)...
But SOONER basketball will be here soon enough!

espn said last night that 50/50 was talked about but never offered. The owners current offer is still 47%.

What happens to the current contracts? Does the lockout season count?

That really isn't true. Plenty of companies post losses and therefore are paying employees more than the company makes at least in the short term.

I also think sports is different from other businesses in that the labor and assets are the same. I don't really have a side in this debate but I do wish I could represent the players because I am pretty certain I could win this negotiation by starting a new league without the owners. It doesn't have to work, it just needs to change the negotiations.

Another reason for the demise of the American Economy. You can't run any business that way. The owners should make more money, they are "putting up" the 100's millions of dollars for the team, building, etc...

I really dont like the argument of a new league being formed, it would take years to form a new league and the owners are smart enough to know they couldnt do that, its unreasonable.
