Notre Dame's basketball tradition is about where OU's is, but probably a slight step down since they only have one Final Four on their resume. Their greatness and battles with UCLA during the 1970s was memorable, but not much better than what Billy did at OU during the 1980s.
If Moser had us in the top 25, then I could see Notre Dame calling. Since he doesn't, I think Notre Dame will try to lure a bigger name unless OU turns their season around.

I personally like Moser and wouldn't want to lose him but that's actually a really great fit.

I have no clue if ND will be interested in a coach who will likely be barely over .500 in his first two years in a P5 conference. That would be a tough sell to their fans. But if they are, it would be disappointing if he considers leaving after two seasons for a program that is a step below ours. OU isn’t a stepping stone job. It’s a program you should only leave if you get an offer from a blue blood. If he left for a job like ND, despite the geographical ties, then it would indicate he never truly viewed OU as a destination job.
His opinion of the job could have changed over the past 2 years, as well. The lack of fan support being the primary issue.

I could definitely see it and I agree with Tiny, I think lack of fan support has been a big disappointment to Moser.
Honestly, if you do your homework at all it shouldn't surprise anyone but even if you see the history, once you get here and start trying to change things it slaps you in the face almost every home game.
I hope he doesn't leave not because I am completely sold on Moser, but because I don't want to start over again so soon and I don't know who else could come in and do a better job.
I do agree that that the lack of fan support has to be disappointing. I'm sure he got more in Loyola. But, the team doesn't do itself many favors. I saw videos of him busting his butt to get the fraternities and sororities out to the first game...then lost to Sam Houston State. Tough to get people back into the gym.
If Moser is unhappy, I hope it is because he's upset that OU will miss the tourney two years in a row for the first time since the Capel years, rather than "Those darn fans won't come watch us."

Why in the world would OU waive the buyout? There is absolutely no reason to do that. The Athletic Department is a standalone business entity and it could use that money for number of things.

If moser wants to go and OU doesn’t want to keep him that bad, they could negotiate a smaller buyout to facilitate the change. That’s a big IF tho.
I mean, how bad would OU want to keep a coach who’s below .500 and wants to be somewhere else?

If OU continues to to not invest fully in the program, does it matter? We’re staring at last place and a losing record this year. We might only win 2-4 more games this season.
If OU wants to stop looking in the minor leagues for coaches, then maybe they go after a proven coach at the P4 level. If Joe C is content with moser types, the why should I care about the program anymore? He clearly doesn’t.

I know Joe isn't loved by the basketball fan base, but I think it's unfair to say that he looks to the "minor leagues." His most recent hire before Moser was a HOF coach. And as much as I'm disappointed by Moser, he was probably one of the biggest names available when Lon retired. Most proven P5 coaches aren't looking to leave their current jobs, so the only ones available are guys who have been fired or pushed out. Just looking at the current Big 12, most of the head coaches were either assistants at P5 schools, or head coaches at mid-majors before they got their current jobs. Kansas got Self because they can pretty much hire whoever they want, and Texas and West Virginia got proven coaches who came back to coach at their alma mater. I'd love to think OU could poach a guy who is currently thriving at a P5, I just don't know who that is.
In addition to what is happening at ISU and KSU, it's notable that Sean Miller already has Xavier in the top 10. But given the scandal he was closely linked to, he wouldn't be a guy we would touch. Mizzou is another school that has made a huge turnaround under a new coach, but he also came from a smaller conference. I think you just have to hope you can identify the right guy, and, as you say, the department needs to support the program. Better fans would help, too.

what is "P4" basketball has 6 power conf ..
and OU is currently tied for 7th not in "last" and currently is in the dance per ESPN
Who is this sub .500 coach you speak of? Boynton?
Moser isn’t close to being under .500 at ou. We have made it through the roughest seas and better days are ahead for OU and Moser. It takes time to build a team the way Moser does through high school players (which is the right way imo).
