Connie Tori has hired a new assistant who will have the title, "Defensive Coordinator". That is not a title we often hear in basketball but I have thought for a long time it makes sense to have a coach who is known as a great defensive coach. That tells the team, defense is critical, he/she will be in charge of running our defense in practice and in games. Head coaches may be great offensive coaches but so-so when it comes to defense. The reverse is also true at which time why not hire an offensive coordinator. As a matter of fact, why not hire a special teams coach for rebounding, out of bounds plays, etc. this would take some responsibility off the head coach and allow him/her to manage the overall game strategy, match ups, etc. but leave the execution of the gameplan to the assistants.

Since we have strength coaches and recruiting coordinators, I see some benefits of adding other titles to add expertise to the staff.

Thunder could use a defensive coordinator.

Isn't that the truth!

I always thought Kelvin could use an offensive coordinator. He was a great defensive coach but I thought he was mediocre on the offensive side of the ball.

Minnesota women's basketball just hired a defensive coordinator too. I guess it might be more common than I thought.

Vic Schaeffer was defensive coordinator for Blair at A&M before he took the head job at Mississippi State a couple years ago.

He was apparently the architect of their defense for years and did a great job. I think the Aggies miss him as they don't appear as intimidating now as they did before he left.

Billy Tubbs could have used a great defensive coordinator too.
