New AD Hire?

I doubt Joe C will stick around for two more years, or even close to that. I remember Donnie Duncan stuck around for less than one year as a lame-duck AD. He hired Kelvin Sampson and shortly thereafter, Howard Schnellenberger. While he was technically the AD a year later when both John Blake and Sherri Coale were hired, he had nothing to do with either hire. Steve Owens was calling the shots then - and was out to prove you can find great coaches inside the state of Oklahoma. I'm guessing Duncan was there for Owens to bounce a few ideas off of, but that was about it...didn't last long

He's not going to be running day-to-day operations, but he'll be an advisor to the new AD.

It was said he'll assist with fundraising, as well. I know he's alienated some former and potential donors, but he also knows all the ones that currently give.

I’m pretty sure he will. He’s getting a golden parachute to step back and let the new AD take over. If he leaves, he gives up that fat payday for the next 2 years.

great something he is terrible at ..

You may be right. That's the plan, but once the new AD is entrenched, they may work something out to let him leave early. Regardless, I'm curious what his legacy will be. There is no way he will be remembered fondly by those who are huge basketball fans. That said, he did hit with his most important hire, Bob Stoops. He definitely elevated the smaller sports to become more competitive. We pretty much averaged one National Championship per academic year since his arrival. We didn't come close to that before his arrival. We only won three titles between the start (1986) of the Donnie Duncan era (1989 men's golf, 1991 men's gymnastics and 1994 baseball) to the start of the Joe C era. Of course, he has his two bad hires in men's basketball, and had a bad one in baseball as well (that Virginia Tech hire).

I did see first-hand how important "image" was to Joe C. I was at the 2019 NCAA Tournament in Columbia, SC. As we were closing out a convincing win against Ole Miss in the 1st round, the OU band started sarcastically chanting "S-E-C". Joe C's head almost exploded as he violently walked toward the band to get them to stop immediately...and they instantly complied.

Yes. Image. You can say what you want, but Joe C. cleaned up a huge mess in the athletic department coming off the 90's. We should all be grateful for that. He hired Bob, which set us up for a generation in football and also financed improvements in other sports, especially on the women's side.

Those who care about men's basketball and baseball will be glad to see him gone.

As a department, Joe C. will leave it much better than he found it.

Joe C probably goes down on the Mount Rushmore of ADs all time. He elevated pretty much every program except hoops and wrestling (fans/donors deserve more blame than Joe c there, though). He was the most fiscally excellent AD in the country. However, he is a bad fit for the lawlessness of college athletics today.

I’m not sure hiring an attorney to be the new ad was well thought out either. Will of course give the new AD time before I pass judgment.

I can't see anyone arguing that. Before his arrival, it was reported in the Sooners Illustrated magazine (where I got my OU info before the internet took off) that Steve Owens alienated a lot of people and the athletic department was in total disarray. Joe C definitely cleaned things up. Yes, his overall legacy is a huge positive for me, but it was time for new blood. We have to keep in mind that no college AD has ever nailed every hire...just wish he got the last one right with the men's basketball head coach.

Joe C definitely deserves credit for cleaning up a mess and getting us back in the black. The AD is now one of the top 10 best ADs in the country and one of even fewer that makes money.

That said, it’s time for new leadership. No matter how good he was, his time has passed and he should enjoy retirement. We need someone who can navigate this new environment and rally the donors to raise the money necessary to compete and win. We need someone that can hire the right coach and energize donors to support the basketball program and lead the program into a new era, hopefully with unprecedented success.

We have a ton of big money alumni that haven't even been approached yet
Surely you don't believe that. If OU is reaching out to me, and all I am is a small time football season ticket holder, I promise they are reaching out to big money alumni. I promise you.

Do you know what a golden parachute is? That is NOT what is happening here.

At most, he'll keep his current salary. My guess is that it will decrease some, b/c a lot of his salary is tied up in results (fundraising, etc).

But unless Joe C. just left on his own, he would be entitled to pay thru his contract date of 6/2028 anyways. There have been zero reports of him getting ADDITIONAL pay or benefits, which is what a golden parachute is.

Big timers get approached differently than small timers. Big timers get courted. We have some old money people that we need to hit up 1000%

So what I take from this is that Stephenson will be firing Moser and hiring his replacement... thoughts from the board??

By Georges writing Stephenson, Harroz, and the new AD will all have a say in what should happen. Honestly I think it will be Stephenson, Harroz, and Joe C making that call and including Denny in it.

The folks on this board probably care more about OU basketball than just about anyone on the planet. We should get a say in this partnership decision … maybe we get a 51 percent stake and we cast our vote on a day Skeeter, Canada, and Canada’s friend are busy attending a Moser BLOB coaching clinic.

by the way i don't believe the new AD will have much (if any ) oversight of the football program ..
so the new AD overseas football and from the sound of it reports to Randall Stephenson .. who will now be the "Chair of Athletics"

from reports .. Joe C was NOT part of the interview process .. in hiring the new AD . .
