New softball thread

Lauren took 2 good pitches for strikes then swung and missed at a bad pitch for strike 3.

The series win gives OU a two-game edge over Baylor as well as the head to head tiebreaker. Texas is another game back. Texas still has a three game set with one in Waco and two in Austin against Baylor. Baylor has three games left in Lawrence. KU gets all three contenders in Lawrence. But, Texas swept them in Lawrence. All we have left is three in Lawrence and three against OSU, two of which are in Stillwater.

Did D1 softball have the run-rule before the games were televised?

I think they did, but not sure. The announcers mentioned today there was a strong consensus from coaches to eliminate the run-rule since hitting is really dominating the game today and good teams can a lot of times get back into a game which they fall behind substantially.

Edit: Here is run-rule game from 2000.

This is what was reported after the game:

Question was if the Baylor runner on 3rd tagged, but she did. Then after she scored, runner on 1st out at 2nd.

I can understand why the 'purists' don't like it. But I also understand why the TV networks might like it.

I thought it had been around when I first started watching in the late 80's but wasn't sure. Found a quote by Carol Hutchins of Michigan: “It's a rule that was put in place in the 1970s when I played, when the average pitcher had a 0.2 ERA and games were being won 1-0,” Hutchins said. “Back then if a team got up by eight runs then there was no way there would be a comeback. That's not the case anymore.” http://www.michigandaily.com/content/softballs-eight-run-rule-plague-or-promise

I guess most of you know that Chamberlain hit her 90th career home run. Now tied for the most in NCAA Div I history. Now on toi 100.

It's good that we have the #1 recruiting class coming in. We certainly have the #1 Senior Class leaving. It will be difficult to replace 173 home runs with only two players. Lauren, Shelby, Georgia, Jessica, and Callie have finished second, first, sixth, and whatever we get this year. That's four good years.

Yes, it has been an incredible ride with this senior class. Great time to be a Sooner fan.

Can't wait to see the new players next season. Such is the nature of college sports.

Agreed! There's not a more deserving player of tying/breaking this record! Congrats Lauren!

That senior class has 200 wins against 38 losses which is awesome. They have won three Big 12 titles (hopefully 4), won three NCAA Regional titles, won three NCAA Super Regional titles, been to three WCWSs, gone to the NCAA Finals twice, and won a National Title.

The various conference leaders did well this week. Florida won three, as did LSU. Bama took two of three from Auburn at Auburn, losing the third game 13-12. Oregon took three, as did UCLA.

LSU and Florida are tied for the SEC lead. Oregon leads UCLA by a game. Michigan leads Minnesota by a game. OU had a three and a half game lead over Baylor, 11-1 to 6-3.

OU's remaining conference games: OSU (two at Stillwater, one in Norman), three at Kansas. We have two games against Utah Valley and two against North Texas. That's it. Ten more games.

Ten more games for Lauren and Shelby to further assault the NCAA Home Run record... But that is regular season games. Do season record totals not include post-season statistics? I thought that they did, and if so, both young women have (probably) significantly more games to add to whatever records that they compile during the rest of the regular season.

Yes, post-season stats are included. Remember, Lauren hit 30 homeruns in each of her first two seasons. Her 30th in her sophomore season (which happened to coincide with our National Championship) came during the College World Series win over Tennessee (if memory serves me correctly).

Tonight might well be the night that Lauren breaks the NCAA career homerun record. I haven't followed North Texas, but it's unlikely the Mean Green can put anyone in the circle who can consistently keep Lauren (or Shelby) in the park.

I know many believe it's unlikely, but I feel pretty good about OU's chances of having two players break the 90-HR mark before the Sooners are done this year. Shelby is only six (I believe) homers behind Lauren at this point, and she's been feasting on opposing pitchers for the last few weeks. You almost expect her to go deep every time she steps to the plate.

How great would that be – to have two OU players atop the all-time HR mark?

By the way, am I the only one who thinks there's a good chance that Stevens starts tonight's game? The OOC game would be the perfect time for Patti to give Kelsey another chance to find her lost control. If Stevens did get the start and wound up dominating NT, it would be huge for the Sooners as the postseason nears.

I figure that it will be Stevens or Pendley. I think Patti knows that Pendley really can't pitch to the best teams and would love to see Stevens back.

I think Shelby is at 93. That leaves seven, and those won't be easy. It will take another hot streak. The good news is that Texas and Baylor are behind us, and Shelby will be facing Utah Valley, North Texas, OSU, and Kansas in the rest of the regular season. That would give Shelby thirty in her senior year, same as Lauren in each of the first two years.

So, Shelby pitching but not hitting? Wonder how she feels about that? Seriously, the way she has been hitting, I could see her getting 8 more if OU goes deep into the WS. And I know, they have to get there first....still.

Lauren got one, and Shelby got two doubles. But, no #91 or #84. Erin and Kelsey Arnold hit two-run home runs. 6-3 final, with Shelby getting the win easily after relieving Stevens who had control problems, as usual. All three runs were charged to Stevens.

Ellis actually leads OU in doubles with 11.
