Speedy, my point considers the situation. This wasn't a regular season game, it was win or go home for the summer. This was the first time Page pitched two games in a day for OU. Paige s a wonderful pitcher, but she does give up her sure of gopher balls. Bases are loaded, Bama has their home run hitter at the plate. Power hitters have a knack for hitting homers at critical moments.
Sticking with Paige didn't work out.
I still would bring in Shelby. First, she's a competitor. Second, she's a senior. Third, she's smart. Fourth, Bama hadn't seen her the entire series. I doubt she would have given up a grand slam.
No question, Paige is the better pitcher, but is she really better after 400 pitches in just over a day.
First, Paige did pitch in two games on multiple occasions this season. Granted they were relief appearances but she relieved a couple of innings against Depaul then pitched a perfect game vs. Hawaii. She did it in Austin on that doubleheader Friday night vs. Texas - pitching a shutout in game 1 and then relieved Pendley in Game 2.
Second, Syb pointed out the facts - Shelby had a tough time against quality opponents and is NOT a top of the line pitcher. There were definitely some rough outings this season for Shelby on the mound. She got no one out against Washington giving up 4 hits and a two run home run, gave up the Grand Slam loser vs. Arizona State, got knocked out of the game in the first inning vs. Georgia, gave up 4 runs in an inning of work vs. LSU turning a 6-2 game into a run rule.
Third, I guess the conclusion is that Osorio can pitch three games in a series or both ends of a double but Paige can't. I don't believe that is the case. Yes, Bama put in Littlejohn for one batter in Game 3 and she promptly game up a home run to Chamberlain and was summarily removed and replaced with Osorio. It is actually routine for a pitcher to go two games in softball especially on Day 2 of the Super Regionals (it should be three games in three days not force a doubleheader on Day 2). There are a lot of players who have done it even as Freshmen. Daniel Lawrie of Washington did it against OU and Ricketts in the Supers in 2010. She pitched back to back shutouts in Games 2 and 3.
