New softball thread

Speedy, my point considers the situation. This wasn't a regular season game, it was win or go home for the summer. This was the first time Page pitched two games in a day for OU. Paige s a wonderful pitcher, but she does give up her sure of gopher balls. Bases are loaded, Bama has their home run hitter at the plate. Power hitters have a knack for hitting homers at critical moments.

Sticking with Paige didn't work out.

I still would bring in Shelby. First, she's a competitor. Second, she's a senior. Third, she's smart. Fourth, Bama hadn't seen her the entire series. I doubt she would have given up a grand slam.

No question, Paige is the better pitcher, but is she really better after 400 pitches in just over a day.

First, Paige did pitch in two games on multiple occasions this season. Granted they were relief appearances but she relieved a couple of innings against Depaul then pitched a perfect game vs. Hawaii. She did it in Austin on that doubleheader Friday night vs. Texas - pitching a shutout in game 1 and then relieved Pendley in Game 2.

Second, Syb pointed out the facts - Shelby had a tough time against quality opponents and is NOT a top of the line pitcher. There were definitely some rough outings this season for Shelby on the mound. She got no one out against Washington giving up 4 hits and a two run home run, gave up the Grand Slam loser vs. Arizona State, got knocked out of the game in the first inning vs. Georgia, gave up 4 runs in an inning of work vs. LSU turning a 6-2 game into a run rule.

Third, I guess the conclusion is that Osorio can pitch three games in a series or both ends of a double but Paige can't. I don't believe that is the case. Yes, Bama put in Littlejohn for one batter in Game 3 and she promptly game up a home run to Chamberlain and was summarily removed and replaced with Osorio. It is actually routine for a pitcher to go two games in softball especially on Day 2 of the Super Regionals (it should be three games in three days not force a doubleheader on Day 2). There are a lot of players who have done it even as Freshmen. Daniel Lawrie of Washington did it against OU and Ricketts in the Supers in 2010. She pitched back to back shutouts in Games 2 and 3.

Notes from the interview with Gasso.

--Regional: Bama was clutch. Lauren was phenomenal. HR last at bat. We were tentative at the plate. Paige became a woman, something special. Tough environment to play in. Umpires who haven't umpired in those circumstances. Toughest situation she's been in at OU.

--First thing to address: Pitching staff. Our style offensively will change. We waited on HR. We would like to be more aggressive, bunt, doubles. We've been waiting for the HR for a while.

--Ricketts was the greatest of all time. Graduate greatest hitter. A tough two-time Big Twelve POY. Clutch in Callie. Vest made plays. Casey was tough. Shelby is a tremendous athlete. Probably a better pro than college, that kind of commitment. Went out on her terms.

--Next year, different team. Still be good. We were #1 or #2 ranked class. Eight fantastic young players. The next "Chamberlain" group. They have the ability to be that dynamic.

--Paige and Kelsey return. Jayden Chestnut (Mustang) and Brittany Finney, six-foot tall, hard hitting, tall pitcher. Fading away where you can lean on one pitcher.

--Leader: Erin Miller will be a phenomenal leader. Kady Self will be instrumental. Paige Parker will be instrumental. Has really grown up.

--Challenge to infield: Might be a challenge Sydney Romero, junior national team. SS or 2B. Shay Knighten, sister starts at third for NEB. Clifton is local. Arnold is back.

Wonder if she's referring to "Kim Mulkey" of softball who seemed to complain on every call or pitch that he didn't like and tried to intimidate umps/refs?

That's why Patty was trying so hard to get Kelsey back into the flow. And why it's so important to have more than one pitcher to pitch.

I thought that every time Pat complained, he had a legitimate reason for doing so. I wish Patty would have been more vocal when the calls went against us.

Don't disagree; the umps behind the plate didn't seem to have a clue about the strike zone. But complaining and whining about almost every call shows a lack of class. In baseball, managers are tossed for arguing balls and strikes. The Bama coach would have been too if the series had been played anywhere but Tuscaloosa.

Yep, the strike zone was VERY inconsistent and both teams were affected by it.

Patrick Murphy has a history of complaining to umpires. Many umpires do not like doing his games because of his constant complaining. He his notorious for it. And he gets away with it at home. He's arrogant and classless and if you'll notice hardly ever gives credit to his opponents unlike Gasso who always has good things to say about their opponents. OU should never have been playing at Alabama but that's the way it is.

The bias of ESPN (lies) was revealed repeatedly when they kept insisting that Alabama had eliminated OU in two of the last three world series. They beat us in the three-game championship in 2012. They weren't there in 2013 when we won. They beat us in game one in 2014, but it was Oregon that eliminated us after we had dispatched Louisiana-Lafayette.

I have no doubt about two things:

1. ESPN's "braintrust" is no doubt delighted to have the SEC at the WCWS in force, and would probably be grousing non-stop this year about OU's "unfair advantage" had we made it in there instead of Bama.
2 Speaking of ESPN, Beth Mowins probably really wanted to go down and high-five that girl from Bama who hit the series-clinching slam in game 3.

Beth Mowins needs to have a "voice" transplant!!

It will be interesting to see if Pendley and Chamberlain have anything to do with the USA Softball program. The refusal to sign a long-term contract that excluded playing with the USSSA-Pride is what led to the fallout between Keilani and USA Softball.

I don't think either will be playing with USA Softball. That group burned some bridges by trying to force Keilani to sign an exclusive 4 year contract. They over played their hand. Destiny Martinez is also no longer with Team USA.

Lauren didn't play last year with USA and she has already said she intends to play with the Pride. Shelby signed with the Pride today.

They may soon need to change their name to USSSAOU-Pride. :ez-laugh:

Yes, four Sooners and a few unbelievable others from UTs - Cat Osterman, Megan Willis, and Madison Shipman from Tennessee.

That was an amazing brain-cramp by that Michigan runner in the top of the 7th tonight. She should have scored the tying run in that game with Florida. It's probably either Gasso's fault or Sherri's fault (sarcasm intended, of course).

2 relief appearances is hardly the same as throwing 400 pitches in less than 30 hours.

Osorio wasn't pitching anywhere near her best either. One thing we do know, Paige gave up a grand slam. That's really the bottom line.

Finally, you should have more confidence in Pendley. She couldn't have done worse.
