SAPULPA — Chelsea Dungee thought her team may have relaxed a bit too early Thursday afternoon. But Dungee and Sapulpa regrouped just in time.

The Class 6A No. 6 Chieftains held a nine-point lead midway through the fourth quarter in the championship game of the Sapulpa Holiday Classic before 6A No. 8 Midwest City rallied to tie the game in the final minute. Brice Calip and Dungee converted all six free throws down the stretch to hold on for a 46-43 victory.

“They got back into it and that sparked us to get it back together,” Dungee said.

Dungee, an OU commit, paced Sapulpa (5-0) with 17 points while Calip added 16 points, all in the second half, as both were named to the all-tournament team.

The Chieftains have claimed both titles of their own tournament, defeating Norman North in last year’s final.

Dungee had eight points in the first quarter as Sapulpa grabbed an early 15-7 lead. Both defenses clamped down over the next two quarters as the two teams combined to go just 12-for-33 from the field in the following 16 minutes.

“They zoned us and we haven’t worked against a zone much,” said Sapulpa coach Darlean Calip.

Sapulpa led most of the game but Midwest City began chipping away in the second half and closed the gap to 28-27 early in the fourth quarter. Brice Calip scored six points and Whitney Kamies added a 3-pointer in a 12-3 Chieftain flurry.

But Chinna Fair and the Bombers (7-2) countered with a 10-1 spurt to tie the score at 40 after an Asia Davis turnaround in the lane with 48 seconds left.

Fair had 11 of her game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter.

“Early on we did a good job against Fair, but she got loose toward the end,” the Chieftain coach said.

After missing four of their first five free throw attempts in the quarter, Brice Calip knocked down a pair to give Sapulpa the lead for good, 42-40, with 40 seconds left.

“You always love to have those games like that, especially when you come out with the win,” Calip said.

Sapulpa (5-0): Dungee 17, Calip 16, Kamies 6, Bacon 5, Mader 2.

Dungee picked a bad school to transfer to. The Sapulpa coach runs her offense through her daughter and Dungee is just there to pick up the loose stuff.

Not what I would expect a coach to do when a top 50 player moves in. Maybe it has changed this year but last year it was like a 4 on 5 on offense for Sapulpa with the 4 other than Dungee taking most of the shots.

That's basically what I saw. Yet, when I looked at the box scores for Sapulpa after she transferred, she was their best shooter by far, as well as a leader in rebounds, assists, and steals. It seemed that she only got the ball when Calip was having a horrible game.

Based on the previous post, it is obvious that you have not watch Sapulpa play enough to make a good assumption. Both Dungee and Calip are exceptional talents for there team and are complimenting each other very well at this point in the season. The Calip kid is the distributer and motor that makes this team flow and is constantly looking for all teammates. Very unselfish player. I would encourage you to come out and watch them play more and not critique either player on a few game stats or a few games you may have watched. Also based on your information about Coach Calip, apparently you no nothing about her coaching knowledge or the way she has built her programs. Very classy, professional and well respected person/coach at every level in Oklahoma. Dungee made a great decision in choosing Sapulpa. She will be better ready to contribute as Sooner after she graduates from Sapulpa as a player and as a young lady. Coach Coales is very thankful with this move!!

Based upon the times I've watched Sapulpa play, I agree with you. I didn't see Brice being the center of attention. Everyone, including Chelsea, have plenty of opportunities to score. If Brice didn't take advantage of her own scoring opportunities, the defense would be able to sag inside and/or concentrate on Chelsea which would have a negative impact on the team. I think balance is what makes them so good.
