not OU hoops related but. . .

Best of luck, NCSooner!!! Be sure to give us a recap on your first game as a collegiate coach.

Hey! I'm in Clemson, SC. Where are you? Best of Luck!!

NCSooner is in Charlotte. I'll let him reveal more if that's what he wants to do.

I coach at a smaller, private college in Charlotte, NC (Johnson and Wales) . I coached high school ball for years (mostly in Texas) and I was an assistant at the DIII level at one time...this is my first college head basketball job.

I have my work cut out for me. The school I took over is only in it's second year of varsity basketball and I was hired in May so we had to throw together a late recruiting class and they played last year without a real recruiting class (mainly guys who were already on campus and they went 0-28 last year). I thought we put together a decent recruiting class considering it was so late. We also are private and fairly expensive and we do not have athletic scholarships for another 2-3 years...so we have some things to overcome when it comes to recruiting.

We started 3 freshman and a transfer today and brought another freshman off the bench as one of our first subs.

We were in the game today through most of the first half.....we really struggled offensively in the beginning....the other team had a HUGE size advantage. We are small inside this year (6'2" and 6'4") as I am having to play basically a 4-guard lineup until we can recruit some size. The other team had a 6'9", a couple of 6'6" kids and a 6'5" in their starting lineup. We ended up losing 82-55 in a game that was closer than the score. We cut it to 9 early in the second half but they gradually pulled away. My starting center fouled out with about 6 minutes left. We were outrebounded 61-30 (the bad) but they only shot 39% from the field and held them to 5% from the three point line (yes 5 percent) and we forced 22 turnovers. One of our freshmen had 11 rbs and another had 15 points so there were some positives. We also took 9 charges (a big point of emphasis for me). So we were able to accomplish a lot of our defensive goals but the rebounding disadvantage was just too much to overcome. (This will be a huge focus for us in practice over the next few weeks because we have to get a lot better at it)

We had played them last year and the other coach was very complimentary of our team and how far we have come since last year. Said we made them work for everything and that we battled hard the whole time, which was a big improvement from last year.

I knew this year would be a struggle with a new system and our lack of size but there were a lot of positive things to take from it and build on. It is a learning process for everyone involved (obviously including me). We will get there...it will take another year or two I think. SOOOOO if any of you know of some decent post players at the high school level......shoot me a message. LOL

by the way.....thanks for the shout out Ada. :)

awesome. i will be coaching my first game as a HS Head coach in couple weeks..! Great Job NCSooner!

Dang it, NCSooner! I was hoping you would start the season with a win.

It's hard to overcome a size differential like the one you described, especially with a new team that hasn't learned to play to their strengths and use them to their advantage against bigger players. No doubt about it, there were a lot of areas you should be pleased with in today. Congrats on your first game!

This loss will also give you some things to work on in practice so your kids will be better prepared for the next game. Keep us posted on your progress.

Bit late to wish you luck for the first game now, but looks like a lot of positives to come from the game despite the loss!

Good luck in turning their fortunes around..sounds like you made a good start and bright things to come!
