Off-topic: Grant Hill responds to Fab Five

When did the phrase "inner city kids" become synonymous with broken families? This is a slap in the face to all of the "inner city" families who work hard every day to provide for their kids and teach them how to take the right path in life. Jalen's comments are rooted in ignorance and it is a shame that he would frame a discussion in this fashion.

Side note: I haven't seen the film yet so I may have the context wrong.

You do.

though it was a very eloquent reply by Grant Hill, I think it was a massive overreaction on his part.

I doubt it; it is my understanding that Rose said Duke doesn't recruit inner city kids, correct?

He also stated they only recruit kids who have both parents or are well to do.

So by extension he is saying that if you are from the inner city you must be from a broken home and uneducated.

.

Not sure how you arrive at that conclusion.

No. He said that as a 17 year old kid, he and a lot of other black kids felt that Duke only recruited a certain type of black player. He never said that Duke only recruited kids with two parents. He did say he was jealous that Grant Hill had a relationship with his father. Maybe you should watch the show and listen to what he said, instead of what other people said that he said.

With all due respect, anyone who follows news, sports, music, anything, would know that mainstream America refers to broken, poverty stricken areas of the U.S. as inner city areas.

Heck, in OKC, schools like John Marshall, Douglas, Grant, NE, are referred to as inner city schools, while just across town, Putnam City, West, North are referred to as suburban schools.

Check the Dept of Justice website, and you will see the term "inner city areas" when they discuss the worst ghettos in America. While there are hard working, GOD fearing, 2 parent households in those areas, the PERCEPTION is that inner city areas are the homes of single mother, minority families that either succumbed to or overcame the pull of drug use, drug dealing, gang life, street violence, etc.... I wouldn't blame Jalen or the Fab 5 for something that has been mainstream in the minds of America for over 50 yrs.....

Are you talking about his current opinion or the opinion of 17 year old Jalen?

I am talking about the opinion expressed by the video, from reading excerpts it is clear to me that he felt Michigan players were "blacker" than Duke players. It is also clear to me that this opinion was based on the perceptions he had about Duke player's family, financial, and education status.

As for the fallacy of the argument it clearly falls on Rose's shoulders not mine.

do you understand the difference between felt and feels?

I get that and I could have chosen a different angle but the point I am trying to make is that Jalen Rose is simply perpetuating the idea that you have to fit a certain set of negative sterotypes to be real, if your anything better than that you are some fake sell out.

You seem to have a problem discerning the difference between past tense and present tense.

Yeah, that's the problem. Thanks

You realize that there is a difference between Jalen explaining how some freshmen in college felt about an issue and how, as an adult, he feels about an issue?

I understand inflammatory and ignorant remarks when I hear them. What do you want me to say? Jalen used to be ignorant but might not be today?

I believe that it may be that Jalen had not been exposed to a different mindset back then, like he has today. I'm sure that those young men were exposed to a different way of life once they went to Michigan, and even more during the years after college. There are good kids who have passed through OU at the age of 18, or 19 with the same mindset because they knew nothing else. Being exposed to different cultures, people, ways of life, etc is very liberating and educating for young men like Jalen, and that is why he probably explained his thinking then vs now....

I don't doubt any of this but it doesn't change anything. It's been 20 years and he still framed the discussion in this manner? Speaks volumes to me.

You're right. It is absurd to think someone might be ignorant as an 18 year old and not ignorant as a 38 year old.
