Off-topic: Grant Hill responds to Fab Five

I don't doubt any of this but it doesn't change anything. It's been 20 years and he still framed the discussion in this manner? Speaks volumes to me.

Fair enough. I understand your point.....

not sure why you all are arguing with someone who hasn't even watched the documentary

It was a tv show. If you think Jalen had much say in the way something got "framed", you don't understand tv very much.

He did not "frame the discussion" in that way. He said that they thought Duke only recruited Uncle Tom players. You are right that that is an inflammatory term, but would you have preferred that he was dishonest about how he felt to be more politically correct? The whole discussion was a small part of the overall documentary. Jalen even explained that most of his feelings came from a place of jealousy. Grant Hill had everything that Jalen wanted in a family.

Another excellent point. Marcus Dupree said that they misconstrued alot of what he said/didn't say.....

You do realize that Rose was the executive producer right?

Jalen Rose (the 38yr old) responds to the comments he made on the show....

"Well, certain schools recruit a typical kind of player whether the world admits it or not. And Duke is one of those schools,” he said. “They recruit black players from polished families, accomplished families. And that’s fine. That’s okay....

Yeah, he obviously feels very differently today. Defend him if you like but the man is simply ignorant.

Serious question? Is his statement true or false???

Serious question? Is his statement true or false???

Serious question, is he just saying the same thing in a politically correct way??

Without the background provided from the film, I wouldn't even know what this statement was supposed to mean.

As to your question I haven't checked into the background of all the black players that have played at Duke for the past 30 years (and I doubt Jalen has either), so I honestly have no idea if it is true, do you?

I wonder how many of Duke's white players come from the "inner city"?

Not following you here. You lost me Stat......

This is the same impression that I got.
Bingo. You hit the nail on the head. Context is important and what Jalen said was how he felt years ago. Duke does recruit very selectively and it is very, very obvious. Why do they do it? Because they can. Kids from the other side of the tracks aren't going to be enthralled with their recruiting strategy - why should they?

I also think soonernutt was dead on the money. Writing an editorial was overkill and unnecessary. Plus the editorial missed the context of the comments.

Why did Jalen Rose feel the need to apologize to Grant Hill in advance of the release of the documentary? He must have felt that what he said was somehow disrespectful of Grant and his family or he wouldn't have apologized in advance.

I suspect that he realized that the context of what he said would be distorted and people, like in this thread, won't accept that he was talking about how he felt then as a teenager. Since several decades have passed and he has explained that he was talking about how he felt then, a lot of the negative reaction seems overblown - including Grant Hill's NYC commentary.

If I was Grant would I have been thrilled even about the retro characterizations? Umm, no. But having gone through a recent situation that was highly charged when I had the opportunity to write an editorial (in a highly scientific journal) to clear up the innaccuracies and misperceptions in an editorial written about an article I was lead author on, I didn't. I was advised not to by multiple people who were not the direct object of the editorial to not do so - and they were absolutely right. So I chose to do right rather than prove that I was right. The editorial was written by a guy who did not like me who has much professional jealousy. However, it was so lousy that it spoke volumes and did not need me to pile on.

I FULLY understand the implications of what Jalen said. Duke has the luxury of being highly selective in who they recruit then and now.

I have no plans to watch the fab 5 show. Who cares about a group of guys who never even won a conference title?

Most overrated media created group of clowns ever.

PS - Time OUT!!!! ha ha ha

Then you obviously are not a college basketball fan.

I realize this entire thread is off topic, but being what it is, what if we re-directed the theme of the topic back to OU?

Do you think there is any perception that former Duke players who because coaches, such as Jeff Capel, are resented by recruits because they came from middle class two parent families?

Put this another way. Do you think Dukies who coach have a tougher time recruiting or relating to "inner city" kids?

Were any of the troubles Jeff had in connecting with guys like TMG, Tiny, Juan Patillo, or Willie due to an upbringing disconnect?

I realize I'm probably way off base although I think most of those guys were either from divorced or single parent families.

I didn't bother to check to see who other Dukies like Quin, Tommy Amaker or Dawkins recruited.

In Amaker's case he went from a prep school atmosphere (Seton Hall) to a state school (Michigan) and now is in the Ivy's. Dawkins, being at Stanford, is probably dealing with well educated kids.

Just curious.
