One Weakness We Could Correct

I will admit it troubles me that a few of you are trying to destroy this site by constantly admitting you dislike the OU WBB team, players, coaches, and program, bur are actually fans of other teams and programs. This is the only site i know of on which lots of posters spend every post to state how much they hate the program the site is supposed to support.

Why not just go to the sites for the teams you are really fans of, and leave us to think about OU WBB and ways we hope things improve.

At the same time, I also get frustrated at times with what I see. A perfect example is the really poor free throw shooting we displayed this year. Someone posted that we shot just under 67%, and 3rd from the bottom in the conference. That is lousy - and it is something we can improve - just by practice. Yet SC said recently that they don't work on that in practices at all. Strange. Why do you think she doesn't consider that something we need to improve at? At least not enough to work on it.

I dislike no one associated with the OU program but am dissatisfied with job performance of several. I also respect the job Kim Mulkey does wth the Baylor program. I do not particularly like her but I do respect how well she does her job. Yes you can be both critical of your own team and have respect for your opponents.

I've always been a believer in the idea that "you practice like you play".

If you don't go all out in some of the practices, how do you know how the players are going to react in "game" situations?

And our lack of fundamentals and conditioning seem to be a yearly constant.:eddie187_jpg_xs:

The idea that our coaching staff spends two to three years on recruiting certain girls and then six months after they arrive on campus.....the recruit decides to transfer???? Something needs to change.

I tend to believe its more of sour grapes with you..With Baylor winning the NC and all.

I vehemently disagree with your opinion that there are people here trying to destroy every aspect of the program.

Frankly, Sherri herself seems to be the one doing that, IMO, over the last few years.

What is wrong with admiring other programs and coaches? Nothing, in my
opinion.

Recognizing the stature of your opponent is the basic foundation for sports and, really, in all of every-day life.

There also is nothing wrong with wanting a program that you support and give money to continue the dominance it has achieved over previous decades.

If you watched the national championship games in basketball over the past weekend, you saw tremendously talented athletes battling their guts out in the highest level of competition.

Baylor, Notre Dame, Virginia, Texas Tech all displayed the very best of what competition at the highest level can do to honor and boost human achievement and competition.

Life doesn’t require us to like everyone, but it does require us to acknowledge the sacrifice, hard work and determination to be the best that winning a contest at the highest level of competition displays.

Do I like Kim Mulkey’s behavior or Nick Sabans? Not always. But I do admire what they achieve on a consistent basis.

It’s the same thing as admiring Einstein or Edison and what they did for society and humanity.

Agreed. You will not find a fan who wants OU WBB to win the conference each year (including beating baylor every game) more than I. However, it does not take away from the accomplishments of KMulkey as a coach. She has clearly figured out a formula for continued success. In the meantime, I'm hoping the powers that be at OU get it figured out. Sitting on laurels, amongst other deficiencies, didn't help.

Often free throw percentage depends on who is taking the shots. If Ana, Taylor and Murcer are taking the most shots your percentage is going to be pretty good. Unfortunately they only took about 40% of our free throws. They hit over 80% while the remainder of the team hit 54%. Most regular high school players hit that many.

I can agree that sometimes I'm a little overly critical with SC but it's only because I want us to do well. Very badly. I'm a former OU student athlete and I take a lot of pride in the athletic program and how it can represent the school. I suppose I take it a little too personally at times but no one's perfect. When I see a program slowly deteriorate and nothing is being done to fix it until the absolute last minute that's when I cry out for a change and I think a lot of people are like me in that aspect. I would love nothing more than to see the SC turn it around and take us to the top year after year, but I'm very doubtful of whether she still has it in her. I want her to back up her words with action and like I previously said if she does not pull in another big before the next season starts I will probably never believe another word she says..
I was writing an article for the student newspaper in '05 when I went to school there and had to interview SC about title nine. A scheduled 20-minute interview went about 1.5 hours long because we got along so well, so I know she's a great lady. I went into the interview completely nervous to the point where I was shaking and she made me feel completely at ease and was very complimentary of my interview skills..she's great. For me that's not in question.. it's her coaching ability and if she can turn this program into a winning program again or not.

Rather than simply support SC or criticize her (which together seem to take up a lot of space on this board), perhaps we might discuss what she is actually trying to do. So, I was struck by a comment of Stacy Dales that during a six game stretch this year (mostly losses I assume), SC refused to call a single play, instead insisting that they run the motion offense on their own. She has recruited a number of perimeter players, as we know, and said last fall that the team would run. This did not produce a very good record, but it seems as if her intention is to break in these players in the style she wants them to play. Now, she has acknowledged that she needs more height, but it would seem that she does not want to rely on a low post game primarily. So, she needs a big that can run, and there appear to be few available for next year. I share the assumption that the transition in the coaching staff is due to a change in direction for the program, so the assistant coaches she recruits will tell us something about what she wants to do. To me, the really interesting thing is whether SC can bring the program back. Some think she can, others think she can't. But the fun of it is in observing what happens, and not in opining about it now.

A few unrelated opinions.
A lot of the unhappiness from fans on this board is because the same faults were shown by OU players year after year as the team appeared to decline. And nothing seemed to be done about those shortcomings. Turnovers, uneven play, lack of apparent effort at time, transfers out, local talented players not recruited for unknown reasons, no camps to scout and recruit, and then capped with nepotism. All the while no real information comes out about what is really happening inside the program, or about recruiting. and then as we point out problems, they get worse as does OU's won-loss record.

Fans doing too much sniping at each other out of frustration with the program.

A major failure of the coaches in recruiting a complete team-no height, and what many fans saw as a lack of coaches actively working during games to improve our play.


The lack of public straight talk about the program allows our imagination or evaluation to see all kind of problems inside the program.


OU athletics and wbb has created an unhappy fan base, a declining program, and a tough call on a great person and coaching icon.
When and If to make a change????
