Oklahoma State has promoted assistant coach Mike Boynton to be its next men's basketball head coach, ending a week of speculation after the surprising departure of Brad Underwood.

Boynton, a member of Underwood's staff at OSU and Stephen F. Austin, was one of five people who interviewed for the job on Thursday.

He becomes the 20th head coach in Cowboy history and will be tasked with continuing the momentum started by Underwood in a 20-win campaign this past season.

A Brooklyn native, Boynton played college basketball at South Carolina from 2000-04. His first staff position came as a graduate manager at Furman in 2004-05.

From there, Boynton spent two seasons as an assistant at Coastal Carolina (2005-07), one as an associate head coach at Wofford (2007-08) and five as an assistant coach at South Carolina (2008-13), his alma mater. He then moved with Underwood from South Carolina to Stephen F. Austin when Underwood got his first head-coaching gig.

Boynton is married to the former Jenny Hill and has two children —*a son, Ace, and daughter, Zoe.
His hire comes one week to the day after OSU's season ended with a loss to Michigan in the NCAA Tournament.

Gottlieb, 41, had campaigned openly for the job before Oklahoma State hired Brad Underwood a year ago, and did so again when Underwood left for Illinois on Saturday.

Gottlieb was one of five people Oklahoma State interviewed on Thursday, along with assistant coaches Mike Boynton, Lamont Evans and Danny Henderson and former assistant James Dickey.

“We're excited to announce Mike Boynton as our new basketball coach. Boynton is one of the top up-and-coming coaches in the business #okstate”

Boynton spent three seasons with Brad Underwood at Stephen F. Austin, where he helped the Lumberjacks rack up a total of 89 wins, which are tied for the most by any coaching staff in its first three campaigns.

When he was hired at Oklahoma State last season, Underwood heaped praise on Boynton:

"Mike Boynton will be an asset to this Oklahoma State basketball program," Underwood said. "Mike was a terrific player in New York City and had a great career at the University of South Carolina. When we came on board at South Carolina I got a chance to really get to know Mike, and when I got the job at Stephen F. Austin it was such a natural fit for him to join me there. Since then, we have developed a tremendous friendship. I have a ton of respect for the job he does with our student-athletes both on and off the court. He's extremely bright, and has recruiting experience all over the country. I'm excited that he's joining us in Stillwater."

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Boynton attended Bishop Loughlin High School, where he earned first-team All-New York City honors after leading his team to a 24-4 mark and a berth in the city semifinals. He was inducted into the Bishop Loughlin High School Athletic Hall of Fame in the spring of 2011.

Unlike Doug, coaching basketball is his chosen profession.

Mike Boynton may be a great hire. Only time will tell.

Weren't they almost forced to hire an assistant after the Underwood debacle?

Why? It's not like he is going to be any more loyal. Say he has some success the next couple of years and Frank Martin takes a bigger job. He's gone to South Carolina.

Wow. I thought I was done watching OSU be embarrassed this week. Guess I was wrong.

Should have just hired Dougie. Pretty funny.

All that is true, but what halfway decent D1 head coach was going to listen to them knowing that they lowballed Underwood? Their only hope was an assistant.

The funny part is that OSU fans, OU fans, basketball fans, etc have no idea if Boynton will win or not. He may be the greatest thing since sliced bread. Seems weird to not see how he does during the first 10 games.

6 of one, 1/2 dozen of the other when it comes to just pure unknowns.

but this guy has history with the departing HC so that can help transition. and they saw something in him. I dont think it's some huge mistake. It just signals they are still in the transition theyve been in since Sutton.

It's exceedingly rare that I stand up for the aggie fans, but if Kruger unexpectedly left OU and shortly thereafter, Joe C. hired one of our new assistants, I wouldn't be happy either. Sure, Boynton might be great, but he's an unknown quantity.

Seems like they are trying to keep Carroll around and their recruiting class together.

That's not the point though. OSU is suffering from a perception problem. For the longest time, OSU for whatever reason thought of themselves as the state's basketball school. And a lot of people bought into that perception.

Now, OU has proven over the last decade that OSU is a fairly insignificant little brother. That's the way in-state players are now perceiving them. That's the way people outside of Oklahoma are perceiving them.

Hiring some no-name young assistant who SFA turned down for their head coaching vacancy is not going to help with that perception. It gives the impression that they're fine with being a Texas Tech level program.

If Dougie REALLY wants to be a basketball coach maybe he could land assistant job on the staff or even in the front end office .....but he would never do that because he doesn't really want to be a basketball coach .
He like the idea of trying to turn around his Ala Marta .....IF .....he was the head coach .

He never was a serious candidate before and never was this time .He got the thank you for your support interview this go around because of all his media friends in his corner .

The seriousness of the interview was about how serious Doug is to the coaching profession.
