NMSU is a school that has gotten way too used to no media scrutiny, so this is probably a big shock to everyone there. They had a really sleazy program in the early-to-mid-1990's but skated by until the NCAA got them on major academic fraud.
Back in those days, the El Paso media didn't stop kissing UTEP butt long enough to notice (odd, considering they're 45 miles south of Las Cruces) and the Albuquerque media was too terrified of the "Lobo homer" label to really take a serious look. A friend of mine did some work in that area around 1990, and he pretty much said the paper in Cruces was very happy to cover up athletes' bad behavior (and their coach was pretty toxic as well).
