OU-Alabama Box Score

A lot of good, and some bad from this game.

Gotta love that the team didn't quit down 16 early.

Buddy certainly scored it well in the halfcourt. Little doubt he will be our go-to player in that regards.

7-2 assist to turnover ratio for our true freshman pg. That kid is going to be first or second team all Big 12 as an upperclassman.

We aren't going to have much of a post offense, as far as throwing it into the post, and scoring. Spangler got a lot of his points on rebounds and good feeds when his man helped. He looked thinner today than I remember? His game reminds me a little bit of Bookout's. Not flashy, but all about positioning and hustle.

Bennett reminded me a little of Jabahri Brown with the blocks. He is long, and gets off the ground quickly.

Weren't there rumors of the Booker not being heavily recruited due to concerns about his athleticism? Seriously? He reminds me a little bit of Austin Johnson the way he moves, and how quickly he gets off the ground for blocked shot attempts. I don't see athleticism being an issue for him at all. Shot selection? Maybe. lol. And that is coming from someone that normally doesn't mind good shooters bombing. He just needs to get some experience on what a good shot vs a bad shot is. Still think his upside is pretty high though.

Hornbeak looked a little off tonight. Didn't see the same "spark" out of him that I saw last year.

Our half court defense wasn't very good, especially early. Move your feet boys.

I still worry that depth may do this team in. Our posts are Spangler, Cam, Bennett, and Neal. If foul trouble or injuries constitute needing another body (and we almost always need a 5th at some point), I guess we go very, very small and play 4 guards. Losing Hamilton, even if he isn't great, hurts. At a minimum, it was another big body for the starters to go against in practice. LK has gotta get our depth back up to an acceptable level. Maybe next year that finally happens.

Here is a stat I always like to watch early in the season.

Minutes Played

34 .. Jordan Woodard (10 points, 7 assists, 2 turnovers)
32 .. Cameron Clark (14 points, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks)
31 .. Buddy Hield (19 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals)
30 .. Ryan Spangler (15 points, 12 rebounds, 2 steals)

23 .. Isaiah Cousins (7 points, 4 assists, 1 turnover)
21 .. Je'lon Hornbeak (8 points, 3 rebounds)

11 .. Frank Booker (3 points, 1 rebound)
9 .. Tyler Neal (4 points, 4 rebounds)
9 .. D.J. Bennett (2 points, 3 rebounds, 2 blocks)

This stat is even more insightful given that OU was playing a good team, where Coach Kruger wanted to play to win rather than experiment with various lineups. I'm sure we will see "minutes played" skewed a bit for "experimentation" against teams like North Texas.

Another observation: Only two players had 3 fouls (Spangler and Woodard). Everyone else had 2 fouls or less.
