OU-Baylor Box Score/Notes/Quotes/Photos

Re: OU-Baylor Box Score

Interesting only 2 of our starters recorded an assist. And Spangler had 5.

Also note we shot 54% while attempting more 3s than 2s.

Re: OU-Baylor Box Score

Ryan has problems offensively against bigger teams because he has no help. I was still very impressed with his 5 assists and his overall effort. Coach Kruger had them ready to play after an eventful last 4 days. Loved the effort by the entire team! It was also there against ISU and WVU, but we just couldn't knock down the shots. Today we did!

I'm trying to figure out how Scott Drew has gotten to the Elite Eight twice in the past 3-4 years. He appears to be every bit the neophyte that the fans on this board have joked about. That "box out" on the Hornbeak free throw miss was related to poor coaching. If I was a Baylor fan, I probably would have broken something after that play.

Difficult to blame that on coaching. You don't think he coached his kids on how to block the shooter out on a FT?

At some point, the kids have to keep their heads in the game, and do the little things like that. That's like blaming Kruger when Woodard dribbles into a double team on the press. He knows better. He wasn't coached to do that.

Can't be coaching. I've heard Scott Drew yell "box-out!" many a time right when the opponent is about to release the ball on a ft!

I'm glad you mentioned Baylor's total collapse after Hornbeak's missed free throw. Kids in elementary school learn to block out the free throw shooter. They'll even say, "I've got the shooter," or designate someone to do it before the shot goes up. I don't know that I have ever seen a lane that wide open in a college game.

I would like to think that Scott Drew is a better coach than he appears to be. Maybe he has weak assistant coaches and he's too nice to replace anyone. Either way, he's the guy who is ultimately responsible for a very talented team that is playing well below their talent level.

It's not just that one play. For a team with that much raw talent, they just seem to have mental breakdown after mental breakdown...game after game. I give Drew all the credit in the world for resurrecting that program after the Dave Bliss era. His recruiting has been amazing...but I think he's the worst bench coach in the conference, except for maybe that guy in Stillwater.

I agree with that! Drew has some leadership? coaching? mental? issues.

Baylor is nothing but a traveling AAU team who's players had to go to college for a year or else they probably would have declared for the NBA draft. That's how they play anyways.

I'm not saying Drew is a good coach, clearly he is not. I just don't think THAT play is an example of his bad coaching. Heck, nobody on the lane moved after that shot, it wasn't just the up guy that should have boxed out Hornbeak, even the bottom guys, for both teams, didn't really move. Must have been some confusion on how many shots he had left. It's not smart basketball by the players, but it happens. Heck, even the refs lose track from time to time.
