Oklahoma's Lon Kruger has hired Rice assistant Carlin Hartman, sources told ESPN. Has already hired his son, Kevin Kruger, for other spot.

I guess that answers my question in the other thread

Anybody know anything about Hartman? Looks like he was associate HC at Rice. Has both Texas and Louisiana connections.

Age: 43
Born: Grand Island, New York
Alma Mater: Tulane, 1994

Carlin Hartman (born August 14, 1972) is currently the Associate Head Coach at Rice University. He is a 1990 graduate of Grand Island Senior High School in Grand Island, NY. As a senior, he was an Honorable Mention McDonald's All-American. He attended Tulane University from 1991–1994 and was on the Metro Conference All-Freshman Team in 1991 and All-Conference Honorable Mention in 1994. Hartman was the 6th man on Tulane teams that made the NCAA tournament in 1992 and 1993. Those teams upset higher seeded St. John's and Kansas State, respectively.

Hartman finished his career at Tulane 6th all time in steals and 10th in scoring and rebounds. In February 2011, Hartman was named to Tulane's All-Decade Team (1990s), part of the Green Wave's celebration of 100 years of basketball. Hartman collected 1,180 points and 538 rebounds during his career at Tulane.

Hartman was drafted by the Rapid City Thrillers of the Continental Basketball Association, where he earned All-Rookie honors in 1995.

(EXCERPT) From 2005-08, Hartman worked as the lead recruiter for three seasons at Richmond and helped bring in three of the top 11 scorers in program history, including Kevin Anderson (2nd, 2,165 points), David Gonzalvez (4th - 1,727 points) and Justin Harper (11th - 1,457 points). Harper was later drafted No. 32 overall in the 2011 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. While at Richmond, Hartman helped develop Dan Geriot, an All-Atlantic 10 rookie team selection in 2007 and a third team All-Atlantic 10 honoree in 2008.

Hartman mentored three future NBA talents at Rice from 2002-04 as director of operations, including the Owls' all-time leading scorer and rebounder Mike Harris, as well as All-America honoree and 2007 NBA draft selection Morris Almond and all-WAC selection Mike Wilks. The Owls won 41 games over those two seasons, including a 23-13 mark in league action.

Been around the block. Twenty years of coaching experience. Houston (Rice), East Coast and Louisiana. Should have some useful recruiting networks.

I dunno; I'm starting to see a resemblance.....:D

put me in the camp of not overly excited by the hires, I am excited to see how things go next year and the few years after with the players we have and hopefully can get.

Yeah, I've never coached D1 (or anything above HS) so I'm not the expert. I just look at numbers.

I trust LK, see how things go.

I thought hiring Kevin was a stretch, but I love this hire. Now that Kevin is the 3rd assistant I don't see why this can't be a very solid staff.

this is a message board...for OPINIONS...I voiced mine. This hire just doesn't say WOW to me. After the success OU had we hire LK's son and now another guy that doesn't SEEM to have great experience at the level OU wants to be. Never said they were BAD hires.

just my OPINION.

BC, I agree on Kevin...why do you love this hire? Just curious...

. . . . .

See links and quotes posted above. The coach has 20 years experience and has helped develop some very productive players at "lesser" schools. He has recruiting experience in some fertile recruiting areas. Now he gets to recruit with "OU" on his business card, which will give him much more credibility on the recruiting trail.

So, ....

Extensive experience .... check

History of success developing players ... check

Exposed to the coaching styles/philosophies of several college head basketball coaches during his career ... check

Worked in several fertile recruiting areas during his career, so presumably he has developed a "network" of good recruiting contacts in those areas ... check

Lon Kruger took his time and this was the guy he choose to hire ... check

He apparently is a good guy who has recruited well in many areas. It obviously is a plus that he has been in the Houston area on and off for a few years.
Remember that LK has very high standards for the people who coach under him. Nobody was going to be hired that has a questionable recruiting ethics. Unfortunately a whole bunch of guys fit into later category.

Kevin was the primary guy in changing Cousins shot a couple years ago. He is a young coach but played at a high level and overseas. This was almost enough for Gottlieb to be hired as the head coach at OSU. Kevin also has coached although no radio experience. I'll take the coaching over radio.

I do not know this guy, but he will be a major asset just from the recruiting networks he has developed in Tx and La. He must have good character or Lon would not have hired him.

I am surprised that some question the hiring of Kevin. He has a great resume and will be a great assistant.

Great comparison. The last sentence above is why Kevin is actually a superior candidate to someone like Gottlieb...
