First want to say I live in Kansas among the arrogant KU fans and the delusional Kstate fans. Talking to some my friends who fall into those categories (prior to the season), they seemed dead set on OU finishing 6th or worst. I can honestly say that I told them I just couldn't see OU finishing worst than 6th. I predicted to them (with much laughter aimed towards me) that OU would finish in the 5th to 6th range (probably 5th). Well, we are two games from the end of Big 12 play and it seems that 4th place is where we will land. I guess for me the biggest thing that stands out is that we are so close as a program that just a few things go OU's way and we are tied for 1st right now. Now that is something I didn't predict and didn't think was possible.
1. Close loss to Kstate at home with a questionable call in the closing seconds.
2. Close loss to Ostate in stoolwater with a few questionable calls late.
3. Close loss to Texas in austin (with what I consider to be the biggest questionable call (3 point attempt foul on Pledger that cut the deficit to one).
Please don't think I am blaming the refs. OU should have closed out at least two (ostate and Texas). OU failed when it counted in those two. Kstate was a different type of game in that we clawed back and made it close at the end.
The point is that this team is really close to 13-3 in conference play right now. Just a little bit more maturity and some calls go OU's way, and this team is sitting in first place right now. I think in time those things will come OU's way.
You also throw in the close loss to Arkansas (don't get me started on that one) and this team is 23-5 right now.
My point is not the bad officiating because that happens. My point is that this program is really close to getting COMPLETELY over that Capel hump. They have exceeding my wildest expectations and are just a year or two from being back to the program we once were.
