I've been looking at this team metaphorically compared to football and have come to this conclusion. Every good football team needs good lineman to be successful. Sometimes your wide receivers, quarterbacks and runningbacks can be average, but if you have a good line, it will make those guys look great.
Well, Stephen Pledger, Calvin Newell, Cam Clark, and Cade Davis are our WRs, QBs, and RBs, but we have no line to do the lineman things. Now in football, the lineman battle in the trench, make holes on offense and penetrate the line on defense. In basketball terms, the post player are the lineman. Their job offensively is to crash the offensive boards, set solid picks, post up and draw double teams, and to basically be a physical presence. On defense, they're job is to control the lane, contest shots, block out and rebound. Andrew Fitzgerald and Nick Thompson are excellent players and probably OU's two best player, but they're not lineman. They're tight ends.
