OU Softball

We got Marist, Fordham, and Arkansas in Norman.

Texas is a #4.

Baylor was assigned to A&M's regional.

I don't see OSU.

OSU was not selected. I want to see OU go all the way to the final game of the World Series and win it. They will never have to leave the state.

Patty Gasso is the Big 12 coach of the year.

Keilanie Ricketts is the Big 12 pitcher of the year.

Shelby Pendley is the Big 12 player of the year.

This softball team is historically good!

The Sooners are 47-4, ranked #1, and take on Marist Friday in Norman at 7:30.

I have to say that I'm a little surprised that Pendley got it over Chamberlain.

It's a Big Twelve award. If you look at the entire year, Lauren had a better year than did Shelby. If you just look at the conference games, Shelby was better than Lauren. You can compare their conference only statistics here:

It also makes a difference in when they performed. Against Texas, Lauren was 0 for 12. Pendley was two for six with a home run that began the scoring in the deciding game of the championship. That was a rather important series.

It is interesting that Lauren and Michelle didn't make first team all conference, but that they are two of the ten finalists for national player of the year.

I'm just glad that we have both Shelby and Lauren next year when we lose Breanna, Keilani, Jessica, and Michelle.

When they are passing out similar awards in basketball for the Big 12, I thought they used the stats for the non-conf. as well as the conference, am I mistaken about that?

Chamberlain did make the 1st team All Big 12...but the team is strange. On the 1st team there were 3 Pitchers, 4 Outfielders, 2 1B, 2 3B and 1 SS. There was not a 1st team 2B or Catcher. Georgia Casey made the 2nd team as the only 2B and there was no Catcher on the 2nd team either.

Notice in the article submitted by Cuda that they refer only to Shelby's conference statistics.

When you watch this team, the reasons that they are a clear favorite become obvious with time. Yes, they do have some great hitters in Chamberlain, Pendley, and RIcketts. They do have great pitchers in Ricketts and Gascoigne. What becomes even more interesting is how well Williams, Turang, and Martinez perform when the game is on the line. It was the lower part of the batting order that beat Texas, not the big guns.

But, what is really surprising is the defense. They don't make many mistakes, and some of the plays that they make are sensational. When the first game was on the line in Stillwater, OU had just taken a lead by scoring six in the top of the third. OSU got a walk, and a runner reached on a fielder's choice (two on, nobody out). Ricketts and Casey picked the runner off second. Then, OSU's big hitter hit a little flare right over the second baseman's head. It looked like a sure hit, too far back for Casey to get to. She ran with her back to the infield and made a Willie Mays-like catch with her back to the infield, pretty much fully extended. That is as difficult of a play as you'll ever see a second baseman make.

That type of defense wins games.

This team has IT and it will be fun to watch them. I just hope a lot of the games will be televised.

I about laughed my fool head off a few minutes ago. Keilani's up w/ the bases loaded, & a 3-2 count. The pitcher brings it in, with one little problem; she forgot to let go of the ball. It shot straight up about 20-25 feet & landed about half way between the circle & home plate.

Oh, & for those not watching, it's 17-0 going to the 4th.
