OU Softball

Aaryn Ellenburg was taking pictures for the athletic department. Did they ever show her on TV?

Interesting that you brought it up, Norm.

I was on another board a couple of days ago (one which has a number of fans from other schools), and one individual posted this:

I was struck by the strange Sooner line-up. Seven starters are from California (Chamberlain, Martinez, Ricketts, Shults, Turano, Williams, and Vest). One is from Australia (Casey), and one from New Mexico (Pendley). Parsons is the only starter that hails from Oklahoma.

Why is this? Don't any Okla high school girls want to play for the Sooners?. Or maybe the level of play in Okla HS's isn't as good as in California? Or maybe the Olka high school stars prefer Stillwater? You would think PAC-12 schools would appeal to the Cali girls, and they wouldn't have to play so far from home. Could be the Sooner coaching staff all hail from California?

Maybe the pay is better in Norman? I don't believe I've ever seen a major college roster so skewed with nonresidents.

To which I replied:

Cheap shot, dawaba. And to respond to the main question of your post, yes, OU has a disproportionately large representation of California girls on their starting roster, 7 out of 9, as you noted. Tennessee did not have as large a number, but still had 4 of their 9 starters also from California. As someone else mentioned, California is a mecca for college coaches to recruit, so why wouldn't any coach recruit the best athletes that they can? And if most of them are from California, so what?

FYI, Oklahoma has 21 girls on their roster. 10 of them are from the state of Oklahoma, 8 from California.

Of the 10 Oklahoma girls, 7 are freshmen, 2 are sophomores and 1 is a junior.

In the next year or two, the roster balance could shift significantly, but again, who's counting? Not me, just some troll who exists only to take potshots, I guess.

I suspect (hope) that some of those freshmen and sophomores will find their way into a starting role in the next year or so, but if the California (and elsewhere) girls continue to dominate the starting lineup, so be it.
But it would be nice to see a few more home-grown talents in the starting lineup...

I'm not one who cares where players come from. If Patty can continue to bring the best players out of California, I'm all for it. When you look at the stats, the other players on the roster do not compare favorably with those of the California players. With that in mind, it wouldn't bother me if all of the players come from Cali. Patty obviously has a pipeline to California and I hope it continues to pump their elite players to OU.

Note, I did leave off Parsons but didn't mean too.

I saw her multiple times as she would be sitting at the fence right behind the plate but I don't think they ever mentioned her. Photography is either a big hobby of her's or an area of study, but she's always got her camera. Have seen her taking photos at OU Softball Stadium this season as well.

Do any other states besides Oklahoma have their girls playing slow pitch softball in the spring? That is a joke that needs to end. All softball sanctioned by the OSSAA needs to be fast pitch.

Absolutely, with California's population at 38 million and Oklahoma's just shy of 4 mil, and she being from Cali., she can recruit Iceland for all I care. She just has a knack for getting excellent fundamentally sound kids for her program. Has a great eye for talent.

Patty Gasso is also from California! She would naturally have more connections in California than maybe some other schools but as the announcers said, there are many Californians on rosters of all the big time schools, including Florida (4) and Tennessee (7) and even OSU that has 4 Californians and 1 from Sydney, Australia. The whorns have 5 from California and one from Gainesville, FLA.

I think it's pretty obvious our pitching will not be as good next year. That's okay as we just won a NC. Every team has some rebuilding to do from time to time.

Sybarite, the 2016 committ is Alissa Dawson of Cypress, Texas, not Allison Dawson of Virginia.
By the way, I got Page Parker and Brittney Finney confused in my post about future pitchers the other day.
If anyone wants to check the committments, go to jenkinsavenuebombers.com and click on page 2.
