OU Softball

I know Lauren Chamberlain received a plaque that said "Finalist" so I don't know if they actually named the runner up.

I was concerned that having 2 of the finalists would split the vote. I'm glad I was wrong!

Congratulations to our Miss Ricketts. And here's hoping that our Sooners are primed and ready to put to rest the bad memories from last year's CWS championship game. They can start by jumping all over Michigan tomorrow night. Go Sooners!

It is looking increasingly likely that weather will play a factor in this year's WCWS... as we all remember from last year, it played a huge factor!

Considering the fact that the tragedy at Moore is so recent, I am wondering if the officials at the WCWS this year will not be a little more cognizant of the weather, as it relates to the games?

I've never been to the Softball Hall of Fame. Is there someplace they can shelter people if the weather gets ugly?

I hope that Gasso uses today's Nebraska-Washington game as a teaching tool to her team:

For those of you who weren't watching the game, Nebraska was sailing along with a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 7th, one out. The next batter hit a ball to right field, on which the right fielder attempted to make a diving catch. The ball rolled all the way to the fence, the batter advanced to third base with a triple.
The next batter bunted, and the Nebraska fielder tried unsucessfully to make a play at the plate, tying the game.

LESSON TO BE LEARNED: The Nebraska right fielder should have kept the ball in front of her, holding the play to a single, or at worst a double. Instead, the Huskies went on to tie the game, and eventually to win it in the bottom of the eighth inning.

I would hope that Patty would call her fielders together and point out the defensive error by the Husker right fielder. It cost her team the game.

They have enough shelter for the teams and coaches, but they hope they would get enough notice to send the fans to their cars, so they can get to safety. That's about it.

Washington, Michigan, and Florida all won last week on last inning heroics. One-run games have risk. A lot of these games are lost rather than won.

Tennessee exploded in a couple of innings against Florida, 9-2. Florida miscues really helped Tennessee. Also, six walks didn't help the Florida pitchers. Tennessee got three quickly in the first. The game was somewhat sedentary until the fifth when Florida got two on a walk, triple, and squeeze play. Then, Tennessee exploded for four in the sixth and two in the seventh, fueled by Florida mistakes.

Florida only got here because of UAB mistakes. UAB had Florida beat last week until Florida scored four in the bottom of the seventh (?--if memory serves), on four walks, a couple of hit batters, and a hit. Florida had done nothing until then. Tennessee didn't make those mistakes.

Yeah, I watched a lot of Florida/UAB last week and they were both tight games against an unranked Blazer team. Florida has 6 frosh and 6 sophs on their team and only 3 that have played in WCWS so I thought they might be surprised in OKC. Florida has a lot of talent and I'm sure they will be making some return trips to OKC in the next 2 or 3 years but from what I've seen last weekend and today, they may be close to done this year. Will have to make a major comeback this year. I think Tennessee may be the winner out of that side of bracket.

I think I saw at least a part of every game in the super-regionals last weekend. I don't want to underrate anyone, but I thought Texas, ASU, OU, and Tennessee looked the best. ASU has a pitcher who can be devastating when hot, but not so much when not. Luna is about as good as anyone. Tennessee and Florida have the best contact hitters from that area. Their pitching is somewhat suspect by west coast standards. They're in the low sixties. Michigan, Washington, and Nebraska should not be overlooked. They do seem to have some hitting, and I think their pitching is as good as the SEC's. I don't see any cakewalks. I think Florida thought they were that good.

For those who may not have seen a schedule, OU plays Michigan tonight at 8pm on ESPN2.

Just to put our team in perspective, we have 2 of the very best players in the country in Ricketts and Chamberlain. When you add Pendley who was outstanding in conference play, you can expect to see 3 (at a minimum) of the top 10 players in the country. Gasso is simply an outstanding softball coach. I don't know if she can continue to recruit at the level but, if she does, she could become the Pat Summit of softball. I'm not sure that all OU fans realize how lucky we are to have Patty and her staff coaching the Sooners.

When we win this national championship that will help our recruiting, I am just thinking positive !!! Boomer Sooner:woot

Texas jumped on Escobedo for four runs, but ASU got one back with a HR in the top of the sixth. 4-3 going into the bottom of the sixth. This is the same Texas team that Kat Espinosa shut out 1-0, then beat 2-1 in Stillwater before losing 7-2. A good pitcher can shut down a good hitting team.

It's more than just the Pendley, Chamberlain, Ricketts connection. When OU beat Texas 6-1 in Austin, the first six hitters were 1 for 18. Martinez, Parsons, and Turang were 7 for 9 and drove in four of the six runs. The top of the order were all in slumps. The one hit was a home run by Shults in the fifth (the fifth run).

There are times when it seems like Ricketts and Shults can't hit a lick. But, Williams has been in a hot streak and drives in the runs. Either that, or Turang is hitting doubles or getting on base for Chamberlain. There are too many guns in the OU lineup. That is our primary hope for a national title. No matter who is in a slump, there may be a couple of others to pick up the slack.

Looks like Texas will be waiting for us, should we take care of MeatChicken...

6-3 Texas in the bottom of the 6th, one out, but runners at 2nd and 3rd... stay tuned, Texas wants more!
