OU-Texas Box Score/Highlights/Quotes/Notes/Photos

And I wonder if it would leave a bad impression on any recruits who might visit this board.

I'd trade any bad impression a few comments on this board might leave on a recruit for the great impression a consistently packed and raucous LNC might leave.

The students have done a great job encouraging others to the game (see the article in the Daily Oklahoman a few days ago). I'd like to see the same kind of ground swell with season ticket holders.

Not sure whether that's directed at me, but I was there and have only missed two home games all season due to holiday travel.

And I'm going to keep complaining about season ticket holder no shows. At the game last night, I noticed OU advertised a "give back" program where ticket holders can donate any unused tickets to local elementary schools. So there's even less of an excuse.

I live a three hour drive away, so I can't feasibly go to the games. I don't have season tickets and no-show though, so I think I have a right to complain about those who do.

Heck, I've driven to Fort Worth every year we've played there since TCU has been in conference, I got up for an exhibition game in the fall, and I'm heading up and gotten a hotel for the KU game. If I had season tickets and could drive half an hour to the games, I'd sure as heck be at 90% of them. (And this mini-rant wasn't directed at you Zim, just piggybacking)

Exactly.
When this issue has come up in the past, many have argued that if the students just created a better environment, more people would come to be a part of it. This season, particularly during Big 12 play, the students have done a better job than they have in a decade, and have even been overflowing into general seating the last few games. It still doesn't get much of anybody else to show up.

Based on experience, here are some safe predictions for the two remaining home games, which are both Saturday games.

TCU (1:00 pm Saturday, February 28): Prepare yourself, as attendance will be pathetic. Even if OU offered free tickets, it would make little difference. I hope the students continue their run of good crowds. We shall see.

Kansas (TBA, Saturday, March 7): Virtual Sellout; both in ticket sales and in actual butts in the seats. Large numbers of KU fans will be there, plus those OU fans that only show up because they are impressed by the opponent.

I don't like it either, but I agree with those that DO NOT believe that a new (or smaller) arena is some sort of magic bullet.

Agree completely. I was there and the people in attendance made it a great crowd. The student section seems to get better every game. Thank you STUDENTS! Thanks to all the Sooner fans that attended the game. The crowd inside the LNC helped give the team a lift when they needed it. The home court was an advantage.

Frankly, those that complain about empty seats while sitting on their @$$es in front of their TV sets are not part of the solution.

Well since i started the complaints on attendance i will state I was sitting in my seat on the front row

The problem is that the fan base isn't big enough to make up for people's excuses for not going. Demand gets higher and people will sell to games they do not want to go to. Right now the return isn't high enough to justify the cost of giving up the chance to go last minute.

I've gone to most of the games this year and my seat has been filled for all of them. So don't blame me!

I guess I just don't get it. You aren't complaining about the lack of people going, just about the people who buy tickets and don't go. Whether they bought tix or not, the same amount of people would be there. Atleast with them buying tix, the university is getting extra money.

Re: OU-Texas Box Score/Highlights/Photos

I'm saying you reduce the capacity to 8 or 9,000 and then come a lot closer to having a full stadium every night. That's where the demand for attendance is. You reduce capacity, get people closer to the court, you create a better environment. One that more people will want to show up to. You create increased demand and drive up prices. You make it a great environment for recruits to want to come play in. You create a big home court advantage. The team gets better. More money flows in.

let me try to explain this ..

the lower level was sold out ... period . .... the donor requirement for most of the lower level seats is between .. 250 and 750 a seat .. plus the cost of season tickets ...

the people that have these tickets and make that donation will continue to do so no matter the size of the arena ...

you make a 8k arena the lower level LNC ticket holders will all get tickets to that arena .. no matter if they go to the games ...

a smaller arena does not equal a full arena ... over 11k tickets sold last night shows that

Some people either don't understand this, or don't under stand that if the arena gets smaller, ticket prices go up because the university will not give up the money. Either way donors will still pay what they pay now or more, go to 1 or 2 games a year like they do, and still have 3500 unused tickets at most games. The donors have decided that those economics work for them, and the university has decided that having all the money and a half to two thirds full arena works for them.

My point is, I wish the university wouldn't decide that. The university and athletic department are short term thinkers, as can be seen with having a football game on PPV every single year, selling an online all-access streaming pass that doesn't include live football or basketball games, the conference realignment debacle, etc. The athletic department already runs at a massive surplus. I wish they wouldn't settle for keeping some donor money short-term and having a half-full arena, and would instead do everything they could to build their team and brand for the long term. They're in a MASSIVE battle against fan apathy right now, as are college sports across the nation, and if they don't start taking steps to fix that now, they're going to lose out big time in the long term.

they don't run a "massive" surplus

Which part. Considering I have tickets in this area and have for a long long time. And discussed this with OU ad and basketball staff.

I can 2nd you. My seats are on the lower east side. Last night on soonersports.com all the seats in my section were sold out. And i can vouch for how much they cost because I know what I paid.

It isn't fans not showing up, it's cooperate tickets the arena bring used.
One great way to deal with that is redo LN and put in luxury boxes and suites up top. The cooperations will buy them instead of tickets on the the floor.
Or hopefully build a whole new basketball only gym with suites and luxury boxes.
