OU vs Marist on Dish?

Please tell me that Sherri doesn't really think Carter is better than Kornet. I would appreciate if someone could splain to me what the heck is going on because I don't understand.

Me either.

I'll try. Kornet smiles a lot, she plays with passion, hustles all over the floor, when her shot isn't falling she finds other ways of helping the team. Defense, rebounding, assists. She seems to be having fun when she plays, besides Gibbs, Shaya, and Sharane, I don't know of anyone else who has that passion to play right now. Maybe Sherri doesn't want Nicole to have fun. I'm being a little bit of an idiot, but it makes me feel better.

Good post.

This senior class is for the birds. They are underwhelming. I don't feel they have demonstrated what it takes to win big games consistently. I feel that such issues will subside when the seniors graduate. There are some winners in our underclassmen, even though they're underrated. Time will tell.

Actually, our seniors are the best part of this team. Our freshmen aren't as highly-regarded as our seniors. Griffin, Ellenberg, and Hook have all been mentioned as among the best at their position----prior to this year. But, Griffin is the only one that is doing anywhere near what I had anticipated.

I don't like having a center as a team leader. A ball-handler should be the leader. We have looked good in the past couple of years with Hook at the point. But, at times, she seems to become emotional this year, something not like her. It may be that her drive has been taken away to some extent. She tended to run over people, and it is resulting in offensive fouls. But, she is also throwing up some bad shot attempts at layups as though hoping to get the call. Today, she simply made almost no effort to stay in front of the player she was guarding. This isn't like Morgan. I look for her to straighten out.

Vegas has always had a tendency to throw the ball away. Strangely, the only thing she seems to be doing well this year is to rebound. She had five again today. She's within a rebound or two a game of Williams and Griffin. But, Vegas has flat out disappeared early in the games that we have lost. Rather than helping to establish the game, she lets it get away from us. It's one thing when you lose a touch, but she seems to have lost it more when needed than when unnecessary. She needs to act like a scorer when we need her. I can't figure what is wrong.

I think Sherri sees something in carter that she has always wanted. Carter does have versatility. She can handle the ball. She can shoot. She can get up there. She can rebound. She can do pretty much anything. What she has not demonstrated is a basketball IQ. She makes mistakes, often very silly mistakes at critical times. She takes bad shots when we need her to remain under control. We would have won that Louisville game except for a couple of bad mistakes that she made at the end of regulation. She made a couple tonight when the score was tied late. We finally had the chance to put them away, and she made a mistake. At one time, we had another chance to take control, and she made an entry pass to Williams when she had three players around her. Even if she catches the pass, there is nothing she can do with it.

I think Sherri sees what can be and is trying to get her there. I'm not sure that she is using the right technique, but she is a better coach than I am. I might try to sit her to make a point---to start thinking. Sherri thinks about April in November and December, and it usually works.

What I don't get it how our guards are out rebounding the bigs.

I think OU was staying in Times Square in NYC this whole week. Anyone think that maybe they had too much fun seeing the sites, etc and didn't concentrate enough on b-ball? Just wondering, I know Sherri likes to give her teams great experiences BUT I just wonder if they should have stayed somewhere outside of the city to focus. I have been to NYC 15+ times and Love it, but it really sucks you in and I don't know how the team could have been focused in. Thoughts?

Marist deliberately pulled O'Conner out to the top of the key to act as the point because if you don't guard her with a center, she'll kill you with threes. She hit a couple tonight.

But, they made that adjustment at halftime, and we didn't adjust to it in the second half. If we pulled Griffin out high, their guards tore our guards apart going to the basket. Also, it pulled Griffin away for rebounding purposes. Our guards were OK for rebounding, if they didn't hit the shot. But, we were letting them hit the layups in the second half. Didn't figure it out.

Same thing happened in L.A.

Sherri said she always looks forward to playing Marist because they expose our weaknesses. She got her wish. The guys were just not "into it" tonight - just like UCLA, so I agree that the bright lights of the Big City got them all distracted. Hook and Vegas didn't even show up. At Lloyd Noble after a week at home we would beat Marist by 12 - 15. Last time up there it went to OT.

Guys, I don't see where anyone thinks Griffin had a great night. She had 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 block. Plus, Marist scored 34 points in the paint! That does not speak well for someone who is 6'6" with a considerable height advantage over a bunch of shorties that she should have dominated on both ends of the court. Now, I'm certainly not saying she was the worst player on the court but let's be real, that was not a gold star performance last night. We have all seen her play much better multiple times this year.

Did Wyatt miss the bus last night? She's the best 3 point shooter we have and didn't even sniff the court while Carter played 16 minutes, really???

Don't get me started on Sherri. I have no idea what she was thinking. I guess the bright lights of Times Square and the excitement of Central Park had her in a fog because she was watching a different game than I was for sure.

I saw three Seniors and a Junior standing around looking at each other. Vegas is somewhere different than in the game, she runs down and then stands as do the rest. I agree with Norm, Griffin had the ball taken away from her every time she got it unless she went straight up (which she should do every time). Giorgis out coached Sherri from the start. He never let any flow happen. He used all his timeouts and the media time outs to let his team rest. This is a veteran team that plays like they have never seen the court before. I can't believe that losing one player (a good one) has set this team back as far as they have shown so far this year.

Derica said she has a stomach bug so now I understand why she didn't play.

Marist scored 34 points in the paint by using a point forward to draw our centers outside while their guards ate ours alive on layups. Point to the defensive sets, not to Griffin.

The team is playing exactly how I would expect them to play. They have some strengths individually but do not have history of putting them together with success against good teams. There is not anyone on the team that has won the Big 12 regular season or Tournament Championship game, let alone a FF. They lack SUCCESS experience as a unit. You have to have players that have “been there, done that” to keep it up. If there is not a recruiting strategy to keep building on success, this years' team is what you get. And it only gets worse unless you have players that have had success and a winning attitude. The more players you have with those attributes, the better your chances of being successful. It’s really that simple. You can’t expect to compete in Formula 1 racing with a Camaro off the GM assembly line. A Camaro has all the attributes/attitude of a fast car, but the Formula 1 autos have taken it to another level…a special formula geared toward taking racing to another level…built different, think different, win different…SWAGGER, CONFIDENCE. OU…they have some Camaros, some Mustangs, but mostly Toyota Prius. They are efficient and will get you from point A to point B, but it’s while the Formula 1 autos or the teams with a few Formula 1’s zip right by. The Formula 1’s such as UCONN has would leave OU at the starting line and lap them, two or three times!

The primary problem is the lack of recruiting strategically to win deep into the NCAA tournament consistently . Had I or 50,000 other people (because it's not brain surgery...just building relationships and producing results) had the option of recruiting at OU…it may have included some of these strategies that benefit over the long haul…

1. Brought in a GREAT recruiter after lucking up on the Paris twins.
2. Diversified the staff culturally from day one.
3. Signed at least one top 5 high school player in 2006-current.
4. Signed at least one other in the top 15 in 2006-current.
5. If three scholarships are available (and they were), sign a third player in the top 40 or nothing at all unless they were off the radar, but had played like a top 10 against other top 20’s from 2006-current. Other than that, you would have to be a coaches’ daughter to sign regardless of where you’re ranked.

It’s not like it was not possible. Other teams do it consistently. The top players were coming to OU on official and unofficial visits. Just didn’t make hay while the sun was shining.

It is very clear how you feel about the current coaching staff. However, I have heard all these posts before and yet, come tournament time, this "awful" team some how manages to turn it around and on to make it farther than anyone expects. Sherri has been out coached in almost every year past as well but still she gets chosen to coach the USA basketball team and go farther with "less". I will make my decision on how good a year the OU women have once it is over. I expect them to be VERY good by tournament time. Sometimes you can learn more from your losses than from your wins.

I agree that it is way too early to write off this team. But, I think most agree they have a lot of work to do.

It should be very clear about how I feel about the current coaching staff's ABILITY or lack there of to RECRUIT EFFECTIVELY. It ain't personal. Game coaching has much to be desired as well. My opinion has always been the inability to take the program to the next level; win a NC since SC has stated that the NC is the team goal every year.

Furthermore, OU should not be a team at this stage in SC's career where they are "going farther with less". They have "less" because the recruiting is ineffective. I don't agree with your last sentence either. Instead, you can ALWAYS learn more from your losses than from your wins. Some accept the lesson and learn from it...others keep making the same mistakes and take the route of a the vicious same cycle.

We should beat Samford next Sunday and be 9-4 in pre conference. That will be the worst since 2002-2003 when we were 9-4. That year, we won one Big 12 Tourney game and we were one and barbecue in the NCAA Tourney. I hope it turns out better this year. I do not think anyone on this board would have predicted 9-4 this season. I thought we would win all except Louisville and Duke, and if we want to be in contention for final fours, etc. we should have won one of the 2 between Duke and Louisville since they were both home games.
