Our Defense

"He had a hat!" The Jewish mother says after God delivers her little boy from the sea and back to the beach.

From what I see, we're forcing a batch more turnovers than we're making. Uhhh, at our size, I don't see us playing it much differently. Yeah, folks are getting shots but they're not always great ones. We even harassed the # 1 team into a bunch of hurries. They made some, then they started missing.

We've started the last three games as strong as I've ever seen an OU team of late start - 50-60 point first half pace. Alabama, Seton Hall and Mich State isn't trash. Even Mercer is better than most cupcakes other teams are scheduling.

Forget the hat. Be happy you've got an speedy, athletic team playing together with minimal turnovers.

Where did you get the idea I'm unhappy with this team?

If you'll read my posts on this and a number of other threads, you'll see that our thoughts about this team are similar. I'm not the least bit unhappy with what I have seen so far. I raved about our pressing defense in the Seton Hall and MSU games. Even I was surprised when the Spartan's veteran guards and wings had so much trouble in dealing with it. Our full court press and half court traps are as good as I've seen in years. Reminds me of Nolan's "40 minutes of hell" back in the day. Too bad we don't have the depth to sustain our press.

My only criticism was that we have been giving up too many open shots on the perimeter. But even that was much improved in last night's game. Except for an occasional lapse in concentration, that was a solid performance on both ends of the floor. The last seven or eight minutes meant nothing. The game was essentially over long before our kids gave up some meaningless points toward the end.

By the way, what "hat" are you talking about?

Old jewish mother joke. God saves her son from the ocean and she is worried about his hat worth far less than the value of her son's life (no particular mother.) Stereotypical and a little bit tasteless. I don't think Silli meant it as an anti jewish joke though.

I think this team is better off trying to force a hurry up game and it is going to leave some open shots for opposing teams. Tubbs' teams were like that as well and they sometimes lost to teams that should not have beaten them when those teams were knocking down their shots. We need to create the ability to run and playing a conservative defense is not going to allow much of that. The opponent 3-ball can be a dagger when they go in but they can also open up our running game when they do not.

I also can't see us getting in a half court defense and shutting people down. It starts with interior defense where we are going to have to sag and help and rotate and people are going to get open looks. I did get a little confused/concerned about some of the things we were trying to do on defense last night but I hope they were just mistakes that can be coached up.

You're right. I can remember "experts" like Vitale openly criticizing Tubbs when his Sooner teams were first starting to become dominant. Dickie would say things like, "They score a lot of points, but they'll never beat the truly good teams until they learn to play some defense." Well, Vitale was obviously full of $hit. Tubbs' teams played good defense, just not the way Vitale and others thought it should be played.

The 2013 Sooners under Coach Kruger are somewhat similar, though I'm not saying they're anywhere near as good as some of Tubbs' best teams. Their defense is best when they are running up and down the court and using pressure defense to hound their opponents into playing too fast and making mistakes.

Yes, our halfcourt defense needs to improve, and I believe it will. But I don't believe a few breakdowns when playing halfcourt defense is a good indicator that this team is playing bad defense overall.
