Parallels with Stoops

I get the feeling that the program is on a downhill slide. Sherri said when we got the Paris twins that we were finally able to cash in on playing for the championship. We got to some final fours and now we have not been able to cash in on that. I do not bother to read about quality recruits whom we are offering because they nearly always go somewhere else.

Something is wrong. I don't know what it is. I think maybe Sherri herself is not a consistently good recruiter. I think she is paid too much for the results we have been getting.

I guess when the attendance really drops something will be done. I hope Sherri figures out how to get it going again before that happens.

It certainly has been lately. Sherri got lucky when Peyton was dissatisfied at A&M and was good friends with Kornet causing her to choose OU. She should help us. Getting Maddie back should help. I think Gabbi will do well at the point. All of this adds up to the expectation that we have a good chance of winning the conference this year. Baylor should be down and Texas is still rebuilding (admittedly they are adding great players quickly). If we are going to make a move to the top, it should be this year. A conference title and an elite eight finish would make everyone feel better.

Both are paid a top five salary for their position nationally and expectations for the money paid should be similar. Otherwise pay Sherri commensurate to the expectation set for her.

It would be much easier to get a coach that can win at Sherri's level for a $1 million
than to get a coach for $5 million that can win at Stoops level for 15 years.

Now a replacement for Sherri probably would not present near the image that Sherri provides the university and that too warrant compensation. I most definitely am not saying Sherri is overpaid. Just that we as fans are justified to expect her to perform better on the court than she has for the last five years. Especially when she creates false expectations every year by saying their goal is to compete for the conference and the national championship.

False expectations produce disgruntled fans. It is what it is.

There are plenty of really good coaches who would LOVE to come to OU for $1 million bucks. I would bet that Staley (at $750,000) and Close (at about $500,000) would be in Norman in a heartbeat.

You are the one that initiated the reference to Stoops:

By my recollection the last three years before Stoops arrival the football team went 12-22 under John Blake whereas Burl Pluckett went 52-36 in the three years prior to Sherri's arrival.

Get back to me after you have read the post on which this thread is based.

Eventually, you will see that you don't recruit basketball players to Norman, male or female, in sufficient quantities to have a great program. Sherri is on the fringe which defines how good she is. Staley is in Carolina.

Stand corrected! The OP did make the initial reference to actions Stoops took to fix a performance problem. He made no reference or comparison to the on field/court performance of either. You initiated that comparison only to state later any comparison was absurd. Seems to me you talk out of both sides of your mouth.

Oh and while I see a need for Sherri to improve her game if she is going to achieve her stated goals I also think replacing Sherri with a comparable coach would be extremely difficult and would probably take 2,3 or more shots to find that person. But to state there is no OU women's basketball program without Sherri is ridiculous. Sherri's winning percentage is 67.3%. Her predecessor Burl Pluckett's winning percentage was 63.7%. Not a great change other than the number of trips to the final fours which Sherri deserve all the credit for significantly elevating the program to new heights.

They do have good coaches. It can't be easy recruiting to Stillwater so you have to give them credit for them doing as well as they are.

I think they have the same problem we do, recruiting elite players. Until they can bring in a couple of great players, they will likely have trouble contending for a top three finish in the Big 12.
