Sherri took a big risk starting Penzo and playing her for most of the game.

Penzo is to be admired for her persistence, her loyalty and hustle.

I watched her a lot on defense and she did a great job of anticipating and positioning herself.

What do you all expect to happen the remainder of the year. Will Sherri continue to start her and give her significant minutes. If so what do you expect to happen.

I will be the first to say that i think Penzo was key to USF..her persistence and ability to make plays was essential -however i think this game was her style. The game overseas is much different and USF is full of the play Penzo is most accustomed to growing up playing international ball..however i will say the speed of most of the big 12 games will require more athleticism than Penzo can give. She will contribute just don’t know if she can do it for 38 min. JMO

Penzo has a total of 12 points and is 4-6 from the field so far in 9 games... she does have 15 assist and 7 TO, it looks like Sherri has moved on from Williams starting, I saw Penzo making nice passes, and she looks like the only player who can make a consistent post pass, I think she will continue to start, but needs to look to score a little more. I think Manning is better as a four at this stage in her career... and maybe playing her in more of a point forward role similar to Ben Simmons could be an advantage for OU.

Yes. Manning should exclusively be a four.

I remember seeing the newspapers after she led Puerto Rico and was a member of the All-Tournament five person team, along with Lauren Cox and Durr of Louisville. I think Samuelson was also on it. But, the excitement in the papers was over the magic of Penzo. Maybe it is an international style.

She isn't the quickest player on the court. But, she does have quick hands that seem to know where to be. I have seen her dribble to the basket and get trapped like LaNesia and TT would do. But, she somehow turned it into a positive.

I watched a replay of the game by just watching the defense. Penzo seemed everywhere. What was really effective was a two-man trap by Maddie and Penzo that they threw on near the top of the free throw lane on several occasions. Both have long arms and accurate hand placement. They ended up with steals, tips, and bad passers trying to escape them.

Penzo may actually be what we need. She does stir the pot, keep it moving from side to side. People get open when the ball is rotated. We won against a good team with one of our key shooters in a horrible slump. Maddie was a 43% shooter in conference play last year, 46% from three. She may make it back and give us some additional firepower.

It would be nice if Maddie got hot and stayed hot.

I agree with you, Syb, that Penzo may be just different and active enough to help us out. I wonder why she never got much time last year considering the year we had.

I think that last year we thought we had our leadership with seniors like Peyton, Gioya, and TT. Shaya was a clubhouse leader. It kept Penzo from getting a good look.

At some point last year or early this year, (last year, I think), I made an off-hand comment that I would rather have Penzo on the court than our point guards, just to see what she can do. This was a bit of a lark. But, she has always had the ability to make some good things happen, as long as we don't have her gunning.

From what I have seen, she has developed a bit of a short jumper that she might catch people off guard with. But, I remember making two steals in the first tend seconds of college ball that she played.

I remember that. That begs this question then -- as bad as we often were last year at the point, do you think Penzo just didn't get a chance because Sherri was going with Edwards and Gabbi and refused to consider or what?

If so, that's a bit of an indictment of the coach and her decisions, I think. I guess Penzo could have just turned it on in the last couple of weeks, but somehow I see that as unlikely.

She's better running the point than Edwards and, frankly, I think she MAY be better than Gabbi passing and with decision-making -- although Gabbi can make some wickedly good passes.

The real scoring hope is Llanusa starts hitting and getting more confidence attacking the rim.
Llanusa becomes a reliable scoring option every game.

Manning is what she is. Talented and baffling. Talented and badly inconsistent.
Maybe there's a Manning without the knee injuries that was able to access all that talent, but
we don't have that Manning.
Ortiz is going to be inconsistent from 3. It's just like the football team Jordan Thomas is who is at CB. He's not going to improve. Sherri needs to move on and stop relying upon them. Sadly there's no Tre Norwood or Brown on the roster to take over completely.
But putting Llanusa and Pellington forward is the best answer we got.

I don't know that Gileysa was ready last year. She seems a bit more in charge this year, like she has grown up.

---Gileysa was still recovering from an ACL
---Gileysa was young. She came to OU when 17.
---How many times are "mentors" actually roadblocks?

If Penzo had played point last year, whose minutes would she have taken? Gabbie's? Peyton's?

Was the original hope that Pellington or Maddie would become a PG? I can see why that was an attractive idea.

One thing that seemed to be better yesterday was the help defense. We guarded closely near the 3 point line without fouling and if they drove around the help rotated over. How many charges did Penzo take?

Maddie has had her flashes, and she was our leading scorer last year (12.6 to 12.4 for Peyton). Wasn't she also the Big Twelve leader on steals. She hasn't been what I expected. But, she has been our best over the past two years, especially when you look at how she fills out a scoresheet.

I do think how far we will go will depend on how much Ana and Shaina develop. We have seen that Shaina can explode. Ana played her first really good game against SF. She didn't foul out!! She had her hands under control. Vivi uses her hands well. If Shaina comes around with a bit more defense and learns to use her penetration to kick as well, this could be a dangerous team. Maddie has always been a good defender with her hands. Penzo is. Ana looks like she will be. Vivi seems to be able to block a lot with just hand position. Hands and arms everywhere can be a good defense. Ana is a much better shooter, or was in highschool, than she hs shown yet.

I think Penzo got four. Maddie got two. Ana, Shaina, Gabbi, and Vivi got one.

Penzo and Maddie each got two that were not whistled for anything since they came a bit toward the top of the free throw line, i.e., too far outside the line. They just didn't call it out there. Both got knocked down twice out there.

Watching Shey play, she’s not really a point guard, more of an undersized combo guard, I agree that she and Ana get a lot of minutes since they along with Madi Williams and Tatum will be our core going forward for the next few years...

Ana not fouling out was a big improvement. I would like to see her going towards the rim and midrange more...

If you play Penzo at point how will you use Pellington. Yesterday she traded off with Ana. First time in was out of sync. Better second time.

Penzo's career above:

She was either 16 or 17 when she came in the 2014-2015 year, a year that she missed due to an ACL. This is her fourth year here, and she has a redshirt year left.

From what Sherri has said, I think she sees Shaina as a PG like DRob. But, we also have a floor general type coming in with Tatum. Then, Taylor Robertson is supposed to be a point. Yet, all except Penzo are offensive types.

Against SF, we had only eight. Next year, we will have twelve (with Morgan). We will see who emerges.

I remember seeing an article where Robertson said the role she was sold on at ou was shooting and coming of screens. I don't think she will be in consideration for point.

As I said in the SF thread, Penzo made the other 4 better. She needs to be the starter for that reason. Also glad to see less substituting.

Penzo may be a one-hit wonder. But, we needed someone to light a fire.
