Thoughts on the OU hoops team? Seemed like a positive trip overseas.

Ryan Aber:
The trip did look like a productive one. Ryan Spangler was a positive on the trip and the freshman looked good as well. The Sooners did get a bit of bad news today when it was announced that Edson Avila, a junior college power forward, would not enroll at OU. That really hurts their frontcourt depth but I don't think Avila was going to be a big-time guy anyway.

Thought we knew this weeks ago

Two weeks ago to be exact. Ryan Aber needs to read this board more often.

There was some confusion in the beginning, with one or two sources reporting he would still be at OU. But when multiple sources continued to say that he had not met the academic requirements, it was abundantly clear that Mr. Avila would not be in a Sooner uniform this year.

Too bad, he would have been a nice addition to our post depth.

We are in trouble.

No more trouble than we already were. Teams that will be able to expose us inside were going to do that anyway. Avila wasn't going to change that.

Actually we could benefit from totally relying on small ball. Perfect the craft as well as possible.

I'm not trying to be negative...but this roster scares me. Clark at the 4. Spangler at the 5. Inexperience and turnover heavy at the PG position. No Size or debth at the post position. And not really a good 3pt shooting team.

OU has won a lot of games playing with a bunch 6-8 and smaller guys for a lot of years now. Osby was 6-7 and was one of the better post players in the Big 12 last year. Clark played some of his best basketball at the 4 last year. As for the guards turning it over OU averaged 12 a game last year that placed them 54th amongst 347 teams, not too bad...Woodard and Cousins are never going to be perfect they just need to get better with experince, i am willing to play it out and see how they look FEB 2014 not AUG 2013.

The old adage is that guard play wins in college basketball. We'll put that to the test this season.

Who has bigs that would just wear us out? KU, that's a loss with Avila on the roster.

Lon wants and will play an up tempo offense. Not quite like Billy Ball but you better get ready for some bad TO's, its going to happen.

Almost all big 12 teams has bigs. Baylor has the best. Austin, Jefferson and Gathers are going to kill us. W.V. has them. ISU has Niang and much more.

You can play it out...but I'm not going into the season with ou goggles on. This roster looks bad. And pointing it out doesn't make you a bad fan, it just means your realistic. Ellis and Avila not coming in is a big blow to our team.

This is the worst recruiting job ever at OU!

Geez, Niang is the same size as Tyler Neal. Their tallest guy is listed at 6'9. He isn't much, averaged less than 5 pt. last season. Bennett will out stat him. Baylor will do no better than split with OU. Austin is soft. Osby mugged him and Spangler is just as tough.

Spangler and Cam are good players. Even though you don't know it now, you will know it in 6 months. If there are any real good bigs in the conference, Kansas has them. WV doesn't have any good players, let lone good bigs.

No one else does either. Kansas and mayby Baylor at home have a chance to have an edge inside. That is it.

You were on here six months ago saying Avila wasn't any good. If that is the case, how could him not showing up hurt in the least little bit?

Juco guys are always hit and miss, they are typically recruited for depth. If a team counts on them to start, it's pretty dicey.

I hate recruiting (and counting on) them because if they don't take care of business, you're screwed.

you didn't have ou glasses on at the start of last season either and we went to the tournament.

Is there any chance Avila could get eligible for 2nd semester? That just means he would start practicing in mid-December and be available for conference games. I honestly thought his size and defense would be an asset as part of the rotation.
