Porter Moser leading candidate

If Joe C wants him then so do I.

Rather have Mike Anderson tbh. But neither would crack my top 10.

Whats funny about this is during the tournament when they were dismantling Illinois, tons of people on this board were talking about how good of a coach he is and how fundamentally sound his team is/was. Talked about how they wanted OU to be that type of team and now with that exact opportunity on their doorstep, he’s not in the top 10?? He all the sudden is a coach with a terrible overall record not worthy enough for OU? Posters claiming they want a risky hire but now he’s too risky?? Posters talk about conference championships and conference tourney championships and he’s done both but still not OU good? Talked about how he recruits players for his system and wanting guys that know the game and now he can’t do that at OU? Everything everyone has claimed they want until he isnt...

This board is too much sometimes...

Never thought of Anderson until you mentioned it. But the Nolan Richardson style of basketball was fun to watch.

good youtube clips of Porter Moser coaching Loyola and of coaching clinics and camps check them out...influenced by Rick Majerus...check them out if you got the time.

I went to a practice at Saint Louis when Majerus was there and Moser was an assistant. At the end of practice when Majerus was talking to the coaches that attended, he said look out for Porter Moser, one of the brightest minds in basketball.

Good stuff right here. I think it would be a really solid hire. That’s what we should expect. We aren’t pulling jay wright, calipari, or Billy Donovan type home runs. This dude has turned down some big jobs already I promise you.

I’d say making a better hire than Indiana is a sign of where our program is. That wasn’t happening 10 years ago.

Perfect example. This would be a big hire for ou.

I'm pumped idk what you're talking about..

Can Moser recruit well enough to push OU to where we want to be? I don't know if he can or can't. I am asking.

I made a visit to verbal commits, a great site and resource for college basketball fans. Most of his players' offers didn't set the world on fire, but he is at Loyola of Chicago. He appears to be able to get the most out of his players with development, which is great. But can he get the Jimmies and Joes in the Big 12 to take OU to the next level?

I'm not saying this 100% means Moser couldn't have success here, but look at the last several coaches at smaller schools that made FF type runs, and what they did at their new schools.

Not a small school, but Frank Martin took SC to the FF in 2017 and has been brutal since.

Gregg Marshall took WSU to the FF in 2013.

Shaka Smart took VCU to the FF in 2011. Anybody be happy with what he accomplished at UT?

Jim Larranaga took George Mason to the FF in 2006. Moved on to Miami a few years later and has been pretty bad there.

Not a small school, but Paul Hewitt took GT to the Championship game in 2004, then averaged about 15 losses per season over the next 7 seasons before being fired and moving on to George Mason where he has also been bad.

The only coach I left off was Brad Stevens of Butler, b/c he never moved on to another college job. I actually think he is a good coach that could have won anywhere though.

My main point is using 2 NCAA Tournament runs to prop Moser up is not a long-term winning proposition. He literally got fired from Illinois State, and did nothing at Loyola for a number of years. It's far more likely that he got a bit lucky and caught lightening in a bottle during these two runs, then it is that he developed into some great coach. He lost double digit games the prior two seasons. Constant turnover in his program/roster. Who was the last coach to get fired from a school like Illinois State, over 15 years into their coaching careers, that turned out to be a good coach in the long run?

Goes back to risk vs reward.....ceiling vs floor. I feel like I know who Moser is as a coach and what he'll produce at OU, and I'd like to aim higher. Yes, maybe that results in a miss. But maybe it doesn't. At least McCasland is still relatively young in terms of being a HC. I could still see him growing. But Moser? THIRTY years into his coaching career? It's kind of what you see is what you get at this point.

Someone on another board made an interesting comparison:

Coach A: 7 years at Hofstra prior to taking next job:
59% winning percentage (122-85)
0-1 NIT
0-2 NCAA

Job following Hofstra: Still at current job that he took over in 2001- Record at new school- 490-189 - 2 x NCAA champion

Coach B- Moser: 10 years at Loyola Chicago prior to possibly taking over at OU:
57% win (188-140)
0-1 NIT
5-0 CBI
6-2 NCAA

Who is Coach A you ask? Jay Wright....

I’m not saying Moser is Wright, but to act like his ceiling is low because you don’t like Moser’s background is funny.

Also, it’s easy for you to claim it may work it may not with guys like Kellen but for an AD that can cost you your job if you hit and miss too many times. Capel was a swing and miss. Lon was a program resurrector. Not sure Joe C feels he can take the chance to swing and miss again at this point in his career. Does that mean Moser can’t be a swing and miss? Of course not, but his track record of building a team and sustaining success is apparently one that Joe C. is willing to hang his hat on.

Again, age and experience matter when you are trying to project a guy's ceiling.

Jay Wright landed the HC job at Nova when he was 40.

Kelvin Sampson came to OU when we was 38 or 39.

Porter Moser is 52.

Just by common sense it makes sense that Wright and Sampson were still learning and growing. I'm not saying Moser can't still be, but it's more likely than not that he is pretty much the coach he is going to be.

FWIW, Kellen is 36 I believe.

Why are you focusing on age so much? Its kinda weird.

You want to hire an 18 year old while we're at it? To be REALLY be cool with the recruits. Tik tokking and all coach that listens to Jay z ala capel?

Bo Ryan was about 52 when he signed at Wisconsin. Probably just a random number, but could definitely be a sign from the basketball gods.
