A nice surprise. The best practice crowd that I can recall. A rough count got me to about 50. The kids responded with an enthusiastic effort.

Today was work and not scrimmages for fun. After conditioning drills, there was a long set of offensive work. They weren't working on a set plays. It was a basic motion look. The execution was pretty rough.

While they don't particularly look like a good basketball team right now, on an individual basis some players made some good plays and others didn't shine. Woodard, Cousins, and Hornbeak all made several good passes. The good shooters were Hornbeak and Tyler. Between those two, Tyler was best. Woodard got to the rim a couple of times and made tough shots. I'm still waiting on him to hit a jumper or trey. Spangler was really good around the rim again.

Buddy had a poor all round practice for him and CJ was a turnover machine. Booker's performance was jerky. He made a couple of shots. But, he struggled to get open and was taken advantage of on defense some. He is a good prospect. But, it is a big step from 2A ball to Div. 1.

Cam played well. Better than the last two practices. He was a really aggressive on the ball defender and had a fair to middling shooting day. Those fans like myself that are expecting Cam to show up as the new improved Cam are still in a holding pattern.

Concerning the Woodard Cousins competition. The Woodard fans would have probably perceived him to be the better of the two today. The Cousins fans would have thought their man looked the best. In my opinion they are both doing a good job.

While Bennett did block and alter shots and ran the floor well today, he was a bit of a non factor. No knock on him. It is my perception that Spangler is starting to assert himself more on both ends of the court. They really need those JC bigs. The team will look a lot different if either one of them works out to be an every game sub caliber player.

Apparently there is a new graduate assistant. The kids name is Kruger or something like that.

HAHA there ya go Gary... Thanks as always. I know it's waaay too early. But from what you've seen, how would you rank our scoring? In other words, 1-5 scoring average next year. And, do you see Booker being in an 8 man rotation?

I don't know where the scoring is gong to come from. Last year we had Osby. If we needed a basket, just throw him the ball.

My guess is that we will have 4 or 5 guys with similar scoring averages with a couple of different guys every game carrying the load.

As far as Booker goes, he wouldn't be in any 8 man rotation now. He would be in competition with Tyler for that 8th spot. Right now Tyler is easily the better player in practice.

Just a guess. Woodard Hornbeak, Buddy, Cam and Spangler might start. Cousins could pick up starter minutes backing up two positions. Bennett could get in early and often for good minutes. I think the feeling around the gym is that Avila will probably develop into an every game sub.

It is still way early. Booker still has plenty of time to get it all to click. And of course Tyler has fooled me before. To this point, he has been better in practice than he is in games.

Can Spangler and Bennett hit mid-range jumpers?

I can see this team relying on the pick n roll when they need to get a bucket. Have Woodard and Spangler run the pick n roll, or pick n pop for a mid range jumper. With Woodard's penetrating ability, defenses could also collapse, and Hield and Hornbeak can be on the corners for some open 3s.

From what I have seen so far, I think that you are pretty close to how they will try to score. They are stretching Spangler out quite a bit for some open jumpers and an occasional 3. However, to this point he hasn't shown the accuracy from those distances that Osby did.

Bennett hasn't been getting those looks as much and he appears to be more limited than Spangler away from the basket.

Going to be a long season, looking at about 8th in the conf.

I don't think there is much of a chance of that. LK is too good of a coach, and we have too much talent, even if we do lack experience, and might have some holes.

I really feel like 6th is probably the worst we could do. And at times that is a borderline NCAA Tourney team.
