I was most interested in how Hamilton looked. It is easy to see why Kruger brought him in. It is also easy to see how much work he needs.
He has Fitz's old number and could beat him in a foot race. He lumbers down the court and yet isn't bad for a guy his size running the floor. He has a nice soft big mitted left handed jumper from about 6'. It looks as though he will be able to rebound in his area.
They didn't have any full court 5 on 5. The close as they got was half court 4on 4. Hamilton fit in OK but was a little lost as to where he was suppose to be. He isn't in shape yet and doesn't have his assignments down. It isn't a stretch to think that in a few weeks he will be able to come in for some useful minutes.
Buddy and Hornbeak both practiced today. They both looked healthy. But, it is my understanding that Buddy will be held out of full court work for another week.
They broke into bigs and guards two different times for position drills. Both times Tyler was a big and Cam was a guard. That is exactly opposite from what it was during the pre Europe trip. I don't know that I would make too much of it at this point.
After the summer practices and games, one would think that the drills would be crisp and the execution sharp. They weren't. Sloppy would be more descriptive. They were not doing anything that would give a player a chance to really stand out. In a limited way Spangler, Buddy, and Cam looked like good players. Mankin, the walk on, is still making shots and plays. Hornbeak and Woodard were solid without doing a lot really well. Cousins was quiet without making any mistakes. DJ was fine in drills but couldn't get any traction when he was in 4 on 4. None of the others looked good enough today to raise the expectation that they were going to be a lot of help.
There were about 35 watchers today. Even with my negative observations. I will say that this group is further along than either of the last two on the 1st day of practice.
