Press conference

I'm afraid that the NCAA officiating problem stems at least to some degree to it being an old boys and old girls club. Officials are not evaluated and weeded out to make room for more competent ones.

The media doesn't help either. For years they fawned over Ed Hightower who is arguably one of the worst in the college game. They also harp on how great a player is because they initiate contact and draw a foul. Well if you initiate the contact the foul should be on you.

That was a good article.

I was refueling after the OU game and missed the first few minutes of the L'ville/Baylor game. It was 18-7 as I took my seat. I had to leave early because the lady I rode with had to be back in Tulsa by 9:30 so w/ left with about 8 minutes to go. Through the whole game, the OU fans seemed to be fairly neutral other than some oohhing and aahhhing after some of those 3 pointers - until the acrobatic layup drew a foul on Griner. That drew a huge round of applause. How was the crowd the last 8 minutes? At one point, my friend asked me "Who do the non-Bayor and non-L'ville fans want to win this game?" I said, "All the OU fans are pulling for Baylor. Most of them just don't want to give the Baylor fans the satisfaction of seeing us cheer against them."

That depends. There are situations in which the offensive player can initiate contact and draw the foul every time. DRob did it a bunch in college. Sharane is getting good at it as well. Positioning is the key and don't lower the shoulder.

Reading the quotes from the verbally gifted Mulkey is not nearly as much fun as watching her in person. I once saw her do a full layout, with a twist, from the tuck position, right in front of me at the Loyd Noble Center. :ez-laugh:

I agree w/ virtually every point made on here re; the officiating, it totally irks me that almost everything short of taking a bamboo pole to an opposing players' butt is being let go anymore.

That being said, I find it highly ironic that I don't remember Mulkey whining from the hills about it last year when she was holding up that NC trophy (I might've missed something there, but I doubt it), & I SURE don't remember her making one iota of a peep when it was HER girls who were beating the ever-loving DOG out of Courtney for 4 years (& there's no WAY I missed anything there).

Q. Can you comment on the officiating in this game.
COACH MULKEY: I thought the game started out way too physical, way too physical. I thought that all three of them, if they go past this round of officiating, it will be sad for the game.
I thought the two critical calls at the end of the game were really bad. Jordan Madden drives in the paint. We already have the missed shot. She calls an offensive foul on Madden right there. Well, why so late? Odyssey Sims had the rebound in her hand.
Then I don't know about that at the end. It was on the opposite end. I'd have to go see it. You saw it. What did y'all think? Was it a foul? Did anybody here think it was a foul? Honestly, tell me.

Q. I thought it was a foul.
COACH MULKEY: Okay. All I can tell you is the one in front of me, the charge was critical, it was critical. I thought it got personal with both teams. When you allow it to be that physical, you have taunting. I thought Schimmel went and got in Griner's face and all they did was warn her. When Odyssey and Schimmel got into it right there, it became a technical and a technical. What's the difference?
It got out of hand and it got personal with players, and you don't like to see that.

Two critical calls and then she admits she doesn't know about the one critical call on the other end. SHOCKER!

Here is pic of the critical call on the other end:

If you remember the Big XII Tournament championship game against Baylor during CP3's freshman year, Baylor was constantly fouling CP late in the game - even when CP didn't have the ball - because of her suspect free throws, which is a fairly normal tactic. But then, when we had CP3 throw the ball in and just stay out of bounds, Mulkey had them foul her when she was out of bounds.

Me don't remember either!!! :clap

THAT, by definition, is an intentional foul! And it's rarely called. And was NOT in those situations!

Sure doesn't look like Griner is going for the ball, does it? When they show the play from the baseline it looks as if she split the two of them. Your picture is the first time I've seen it from the side and the contact is apparent. You ,knew the girl didn't end up in a heap all on her own.

It used to be if you made contact with the player OB when they still had the ball it was a T. Not sure what the rule is after they let it go.

I agree. This is first pic I'd seen as well. Griner usually didn't foul at the top but got the foul with the body a lot of times when it wasn't called. In the game we played in Wacko, when she fouled out, she blocked Aaryn's (I think she's who got fouled) shot at the top cleanly but fouled her with the body and it was appropriately called.

I wouldn't be surprised at some point in time to see Kim have a Woody Hayes moment and physically attack another player or official.

If my name were Melissa Barlow, Laura Morris or Frank Steratore, I might be watching over my shoulder a little more these days!!! :ez-roll:

^^^^

The above made me laugh! But seriously, there is much truth to what you posted. KM is perhaps the most (OPENLY) competitive coach I have ever seen. She should charge admission... I'd pay, as long as Baylor was losing!
