Proud of these guys

So I went and checked some Texas Tech message boards. Guess what they were complaining about? The officiating.

If you look at the box score we only committed 5 more fouls than them. It's not like there was a huge disparity. They were the more aggressive team taking it to the basket so of course they were going to get more calls. We launched 22 three-point shots and they only took 14.

Every trip down the court seemed to end with their fans booing. To the point that I honestly think they may have been playing boos through the speakers. I wouldn't put it past tech

Top 30 in KenPom despite Harkless missing the first few games, Reaves, Williams, Hill, and Manek missing two each. I know we aren’t alone in having had those issues, but all our guys who have missed time due to Covid are key players. Top 30 may not be “great,” but it is certainly good, especially compared to most of the Sampson teams, which I think was the point of the comment.

top 30 = top 10% of college basketball ... that seems great to me

They had no fouls for the first 16 minutes of the game and 1 for the final nine minutes. Those fans are idiots if they think they got a raw deal (I've generally found Tech fans to be a lower form of life, so it's not surprising).

Tech was more aggressive on drives because they were getting whistles. OU couldn't buy a whistle on a drive. At some point, when you're getting mauled every time you drive to the basket with no relief from the officials, you take another approach. You have to.

This is how officiating can impact a game, and it's often not reflected in the stats. When a hard-nosed, hawking, physical defensive team is given a free pass for the first 16 minutes of the game, that's a benefit that cannot be measured in stats alone. The officials called just enough fouls on Tech late in the first half and early in the second to make the final stats reasonably even (I'm not saying it was intentional, but that's what happened), but 25 minutes with 1 foul called on that team is absurd.

You keep saying they didn’t get called for a foul for the first 16 minutes. I think we were only called for two during that time. I don’t remember them getting away with fouls. They were just playing good defense without fouling. Do you think the refs should call a foul just because they haven’t done it in a while? Point out some specific fouls the refs missed in the first 16 minutes.

I view it as a hard fought game. It's too bad that the good guys lost

^^^ This.

And, know what? It's been mentioned a few times, but I haven't seen (not on this thread, at least) anyone crying about the absence of Reaves and Williams.

Did it hurt OU's chances when our top scorer/rebounder/assists leader and another contributing starter get held out due to COVID protocol? Of course it did. But in today's pandemic culture it's just part of the game.

I'm proud of our fans/posters for refusing to make it an excuse for losing the game. And I agree with another poster: hope we meet Tech again in the conference tourney.

Love this team and depth! Kept playing hard and never gave up. Everybody contributes. Almost pulled it out and completed the comeback. Harkless's rebounding foul was the nail in the coffin. We were down three and got the rebound. We were about to tie the game up. Looking forward to our next game!
Hard to be humble when you're a Sooner!:chestram2:

I was curious so I rewatched the first half of the game tonight (yes I’m a masochist haha). I paid close attention to the defense of both teams. Tech committed their first foul at the 12:13 mark on Harkless. We had 2 called on us by then, both obvious fouls. At the end of the half the foul count was OU-4, TT-3. Both teams played intense hard-nosed defense without fouling. It’s obvious that Tech is coached to go straight up and also not to reach. They just don’t commit silly fouls. The officiating was just fine. Most fans don’t want to see a game where the refs are whistle happy and call every single touch foul, like the Texas game. Now that game was almost impossible to watch.

i watched the game again as well and think the refs were better than most big 12 games ..

the only big miss was harkless getting hit in the face on his late game layup

Watched the Texas Baylor game. I though the refs was marginal in th Texas Tech game until I watched the Baylor game. It looked like a ring match at times. Hope the refs get things a little better under control.

John Higgins officiated in that game as well. He tends to let a few things go that can lead to a rough and tumble game sometimes, but he is generally viewed as one of the top officials in college basketball.

That said, I didn’t have a problem with the officiating in the tech game. I thought the game was close to getting out of hand at times. And, as usual, there were a few missed calls and no calls both ways. But, IMO, there was nothing unusual or unfair about that.
