Random thoughts on the game

Beating a ranked opponent this early in the season is always a good win.
I liked the twin towers look that OU ended the game the last minutes.

Against teams with more height, Sherri needs to consider playing them more together if possible.
The only other takeaway would be it might be time to feed Kellogg some more minutes. OU needs more inside depth when the 4 guard look is not working and OU is getting out rebounded.

I really hate to disagree with Sherri, but Kellogg needs more time. Portia seems lost in space out there. Eleven minutes, no rebounds? It's because she isn't going to the basket or blocking out. She's standing there, apparently lost.

I wasn't comparing Griffin to Courtney. I was pointing out that you can grab rebounds close to the basket. If you watch Griffin, many times when a shot goes up, she will run to the free throw line to block someone out. But, instead of releasing at the proper time and going for the basket, she stays in place to see if another Sooner will go for the rebound. Last night she didn't do that much and she had 9 boards which is a good night.

From stats:

Points in the paint-GON 22,OU 28.
Points off turnovers-GON 19,OU 5.
2nd chance points-GON 19,OU 17.
Fast break points-GON 2,OU 4.
Bench points-GON 41,OU 26.
Score tied-14 times.
Lead changed-21 times.
Last FG-GON 2nd-03:25, OU 2nd-01:56.
Largest lead-GON by 5 2nd-19:42, OU by 5 1st-14:19.

Gonzaga obviously took advantage of turnovers where the Sooners did not.

We continue to have very few fast break points. For a team that supposedly likes to run, that is very peculiar.

My thoughts on the game are:

Positive -- we showed heart, hustle, energy and competitiveness, which are trademarks of a sherri coale team and collectively decided the game.

Negatives -- too many to discuss without sounding too negative following a great win. However, we played scary dumb after taking a 2 pt lead with a couple minutes to go. It was like being in the twilight zone. After taking the lead, we played like we were 5 points down and, just as strangely, they played as if they were 5 points up. It was flat bizarre.

Nit Pickings -- Mo was tough, but she needs to slow everything down. T E will have to learn that this isn't high school, and you can't dribble with ball between you and a man defender. KK is the only kid we have that applies proper rebounding fundamentals. Everyone else tries hard, but doesn't use proper technique. Really simple, feet apart, rear out, weight forward, arms and elbows out to feel for backside movement and resist being pushed in. Really starting to like the Carter kid. Huge upside. Too early to tell, but she might be special down the road.

Really good win. Great job girls.

I don't think Kellogg is the answer at the 4 but I don't believe Portia is either. I said several weeks ago that I thought Portia might be a surprise this year. I now believe that was wishful thinking.

We are all neglecting to talk about Sharane who is leading this team right along with Morgan. She has bee an absolute warrior on the boards, inside, pressure defense.

Her 3 point stroke will increase as the season progresses, just like it did last year.

She is very, very important because of the fire, effort, leadership she is bringing!

Props, props, props. She rocks.

We would be in deep trouble without Morgan or Sharane. Right now, we have no one who are close to them.

+1
I thought that when Aaryn was all covered up and Sharane was out of the game, we struggled on offense. That's what made Carter's contributions so important. It looks to me like Sharane is our "give her the ball when we're in trouble" girl.

I think it is a bit early to write Kellogg off. I felt that she looked pretty good in the few minutes she has had. We probably won't see her against Louisville as Sherri clearly doesn't trust her or Wyatt in the tough games.

I hope Kellogg is ready by Big 12 time. I feel she has more upside than Portia.
