It was a good win after Friday night.

What did Clemson get... 20+ offensive rebounds?
I know how to box out. Maybe I could be hired as an advisor...

I reported the coaches were worried about rebounding when we graduated Spangler last year. Its a work in Progress. Lattin and Muni arent physical rebounders.

Clemson had some cats that could grab a board. Its not a simple as blocking out or no one would have problems rebounding...

It's interesting that for all the thought of missing Buddy and Isaiah, I am already missing what Spangler did on the glass for three years.

Everyone is going to have to rebound the basketball this year, guards included. James and Odomes are capable.

I thought the same thing...not an excuse but man, on one trip in particular down the stretch EVERY frickin ball bounced long...and right to their guys.

There def were some that we just stood there..

We've out-rebounded the other 3 teams by avg of 11ish..total

NW OFF 16 OU DEF 26 total OU 41/32 nw
TU OFF 6 OU DEF 34 total OU 46/31 tu
UNI OFF 5 OU DEF 31 total OU 42/32 uni

Clemson OFF 23 OU DEF 28 total OU 33/47 clemson
Clemson DEF 24 OU OFF 5

Obviously MOST schools will have more Def rebounds usually by about 10 (at least OU's first 3 games) but with clemson they killed us on our OFF end..by almost 20.

There were more long rebounds in that game that I could remember and the ball seemed to have a mind of its own each and every time.

While it's true Clemson kicked our butt on the boards in last night's game, I choose to believe that was an anomaly. The ball simply didn't bounce our way, especially in the second half.

It's interesting to note that through the first four games, this team still holds a +5 rebounding edge on their opponents, despite a dismal performance on the boards against Clemson?. We don't have a player like Spanger who is averaging 9 rebounds or better in every game, but our second through the fifth spots actually have better averages than their counterparts last season. Doolittle has a 6.8 average; Lattin at 6.3; followed by McNeace at 5.5 and James with a 4.3 average. Odomes has a respectable 3.8 average, and Freeman, who has been criticized for not rebounding better, boosted his average to 2.3 by snagging 4 rebounds in the Clemson game. For the record, he tied Lattin for third best in that game.

I think we all know that rebounding will likely be by committee this season. The jury is still out, of course, but I think this team will more than hold their own against the majority of teams they face. Time will tell if I'm right.

I know we're considered athletic, but Clemson took it to another level. Their guys many times simply out jumped ours. Need to get tougher too..

Agreed. Spangler defined toughness and determination. Our players could definitely benefit from watching game film of the way he worked on the boards last season.

I also think they can do a better job of boxing out. I'll repeat what I said on another thread. Some of our players, especially the youngsters, depend too much on their athleticism and hops to get rebounds. That worked for them in high school. It's not the same at the college level.

Oddly enough, the worst big statistically in rebounding does the best job of blocking out. That's one of the reasons he doesn't get to many loose balls and rebounds. Matt Freeman is fundamentally sound in nearly every phase of the game. He may not be the most athletic player on the floor. But, he's further along in his court savvy and understanding of the game than any of the newcomers.

You are right. They jumped over our backs several times. That is why we need to box out and keep them a 2' further out.

It's good to hear some of you guys talking about those long rebounds.

I tried to argue that our Sooners got outrebounded in a particular game a couple of years ago, and I was told to stop making excuses for our poor rebounding. Now I feel vindicated. :ez-laugh:

One could argue Spangler is who OU will miss the most. Nobody will replace Buddy's points. But as a group OU might come close. Not sure our post as a group can replace the boards Ryan grabbed.
But they will hopefully get better than what we saw v Clemson.
