Who wouldn't love to have Renzi Stone or Jason Yanish this season.

I wonder if any of the big Capel supports know who those guys are?

Stone, while limited offensively, was a very physical presence and played great post defense. If Tiny Gallon had a smidge of the heart of Stone, he'd have been all american last year.

Yannish had an offensive game, but did not like contact and wasn't physical until the KU game in 1996 when he dominated that game on the boards down the stretch. A great moment from that game, as it was senior day and his last game as a sooner, after the game Kelvin was trying to find Jason to interview him over the loudspeaker, but he'd left the floor and nobody knew where he was. On the way him on the radio, one of the radio guys reported he was seen leaving the floor crying after the game was over. The moment he'd waited 4 or 5 years to come had finally arrived and he seized it. Awesome.

You know it's a down year when fans are wishing Renzi and Yanish on a roster. We need to start a list of "you know it's a down year when....

Capel supporters are OU fans.

Because most of the capel supporters seem to be students. If so, they would have been 5 years old when Yannish played.

This is correct. The fans were on the floor chanting his name and the moment was too much for him. His rebounding effort, especially in the second half, was outstanding.

Yo-Yo had a very similar game against KU in 2003 after Brown was knocked out in the first half. Ended up with 10+ boards.

I moved to Oklahoma in 1998, just in time for my Dad to get season tickets to the 98-99 season, so I'm not too familiar with Yanish. But we named our dog after Renzi...so I'm definitely familiar with him (not that I really consider myself a Capel supporter in the sense that is indicated by Denver Sooner).

My thoughts as well.

What does being a Capel supporter have anything to do with remembering a player?

Beats me. I'm a Capel supporter, and remember just about every player who has suited up for OU since the Dave Bliss era. And if I wasn't a Capel supporter, I'd still remember those players.

My best memory of Renzi Stone was in the 1998 NCAA Tournament. Indiana was beating the crap out of us, but Renzi appeared to have been the one OU player who showed up to play (in the first half, anyway). Had he not hit a few key beskets which kept us within 20, I doubt that furious comeback to force OT would have ever happened.

Exactly. I'm not old enough to remember the Bliss era, but I remember the KS era quite vividly.

But I'm presuming since I don't refuse to give Capel any credit since he's been at OU, that makes me unable to remember any players before his time? :facepalm

I don't think that's what he's saying. Some of the posters like SoonerSam, Cal40, and others are current students. Depending on how young they are, they probably don't remember Yannish and maybe not Stone even though Stone was 4-5 years younger than Yannish.

Many may not remember, but Tubbs recruited Yannish instead of recruiting Big Country. Both were from small schools but Yannish had an offensive game and Country did not until Eddie worked with him at OSU. I can still remember Ryan Minor working Big Country over in the state tournament. Minor made Country look like a slow 6'5" white guy who couldn't jump when he was 7'.

Doesn't Minor still hold the record for most state tournament points? Or has that been surpassed?

Not sure how you can come to those conclusions from what the OP stated. However, I can assure you that: (1) I support Capel, (2) I'm neither a current nor former OU student, and (3) I'm plenty old enough (sadly) to remember both of those guys and every other former Sooner player mentioned in this thread.

Though I seldom agree with your negative rantings about Sooner basketball in general and Jeff Capel in particular, I must admit that you are very knowledgeable about the OU hoops program over the last 30 years or so.

Capel supporters are OU fans.

Because the bulk of them seem to be members of the Capables which means they are probably 18-22 years old. If I am correct about that they would have been pretty young when those guys played for OU. Al Gore hadn't even invented the internet when Yanish played.

:ez-roll: That made my day right there
